A day in the life…
Wondering what a day in the life of Pathology Associate I at The Iowa Clinic might look like?
  • Receive, accession, and verify cytology specimens for accuracy and proper labeling.
  • Prepare cytology samples using techniques such as centrifugation, pipetting, and smear preparation.
  • Perform testing of Thin Prep and other liquid-based cytology specimens.
  • Perform staining procedures, including Papanicolaou (PAP) and other specialized stains, ensuring consistent and high-quality results.
  • Inspect prepared slides for quality and proper staining before submission for evaluation.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of specimen handling, preparation and any corrective actions taken.
  • Adhere to quality assurance protocols and participate in laboratory audits as required.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, automated slide processors, slide reader, cover slipper and stainers.
  • Follow established laboratory protocols and adhere to regulatory standards for CLIA inspection.
  • Handle biohazardous materials and chemicals in accordance with safety procedures.
  • Work closely with the cytologist, pathologists and pathology staff to prioritize and complete tasks efficiently.
  • Assist with inventory management, including ordering and stocking supplies.
  • Promotes a positive, professional image of The Iowa Clinic both internally and externally. Promotes positive interpersonal relations with all personnel.
  • Maintains relationships with clinic personnel to facilitate positive working relationships in issue resolution
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of all patient and financial information and uses discretion in patient/visitor interactions.

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
Qualifications
  • Prior experience in a pathology laboratory or cytology setting is preferred but not required
