Job Summary   

The accounting specialist provides administrative and accounting support to the accounting manager and accountant of the producer commission group, a subgroup of the Payroll Department. The position performs daily operational duties that include entries and adjustments prior to the end of the pay period, administration of the monthly commission payroll, and post payroll reports. Performs any combination of routine calculating, posting and verifying duties to obtain financial data for use in maintaining accounting records.    

What You’ll Do:  

  • Review and understand the compensation terms of the employee/agent agreements, draw assignments, and promissory notes.
  • Ensure proper documents are in place before system profile is established for commissioned employees.
  • Generate, analyze, and make necessary corrections of monthly commission statements.
  • Prepare import spreadsheet for monthly commission payroll.
  • Uses accounting experience and judgement to analyze and interpret data and/or underlying transactions to determine proper accounting treatment, so necessary journal entries can be prepared and recorded accurately.
  • Analyze and interpret general ledger activity to identify root cause issues or explanations.
  • Independently research and document reconciling items and other variances for general ledger balances and, if applicable, making any correcting journal entries.
  • Manage the group’s shared inbox. Prepares/distributes mail.
  • Processes address changes and contact information in accounting system.
  • Contribute to the development of accounting procedures and standard operating procedures.
  • Must be professional and have courteous customer service skills even under pressure.
  • Regular and consistent attendance is expected and a necessary component of the job. Must be flexible with schedule at month and year-end close process.
  • Must regard all accounting and payroll information as highly confidential.
  • This position will be the back up to the accountant and provide overall team support. Requires someone with initiative, desire to learn and develop productive relationships with IOA agents and employees.

What We’re Looking For:  

      Associate in accounting. One to three years’ administrative experience and basic accounting knowledge of assets, liabilities, income, expenses, debit, credits, and journal entries.  

      Experience in the insurance industry is preferred.  

      Experience using Applied – EPIC (agency management system/general ledger) highly preferred.  

      Proficiency in Microsoft Office13 Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook. Above average Excel skills needed.  

      Ability to listen and communicate (verbal/written) and follow-up effectively with employees, agents, managers, and executives
