MassChallenge is hiring a strategic Chief Operating Officer (COO) to lead the organization in operational excellence including ensuring the performance and impact of mission-critical enablement functions including finance, people strategy, marketing and facilities. In addition, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) will play an outsized role in setting and managing organizational strategy and a connected global network.


As a member of the executive leadership team, and reporting to the CEO, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) will contribute to setting and driving organizational vision and operational strategy. The Chief Operating Officer will develop actionable strategies and plans that translate organizational vision and operational strategy into effective daily operations and ensure alignment with the short-term and long-term objectives of MassChallenge. You will directly oversee critical enablement functions including marketing and events, finance, legal and compliance, office space, and people strategy (HR), and will lead the management team across all MassChallenge programs and locations.


What You’ll Do

Leadership and Operational Strategy

  • Oversee overall company operations and drive annual organization strategic planning process
  • With CEO, set strategy for and manage global MassChallenge network
  • Manage team system by enabling collaboration, strategic problem solving and transparency
  • With CEO, identify and vet opportunities for MassChallenge to extend its impact in adjacent, non-core categories
  • Create and implement business strategies and KPIs across key internal functions
  • Build strong relationships with direct reports; listen to, coach, motivate and recognize them

People Strategy

  • Drive initiative to establish compelling and integrated employee value proposition
  • Ensure development and retention of top talent; serve as a talent business partner
  • Advise on and resolve complex employee relations and performance management issues


  • Create and maintain accurate forecasting models; manage annual operational budget and report progress and challenges
  • Manage accounting system that enables strategic budgeting and quick access to information
  • Identify critical business metrics and KPIs; create an effective management reporting system
  • Oversee the audit process and ensure proper government filings


  • In partnership with VP, Marketing, establish marketing and branding strategy and objectives
  • Oversee execution of marketing, PR and branding objectives
  • Advise and guide team on strategic and tactical marketing, branding and PR decisions

Legal and Compliance

  • Oversee MassChallenge’s complex legal structure as a non-profit operating in multiple countries
  • Create, maintain, and enforce effective licensing agreements across business entities
  • Review, approve, and maintain all leases and contracts
  • Liaise with external counsel on matters across the organization

Office Space

  • Ensure smooth operations of MassChallenge’s Boston office space
  • Provide strategic direction to maximize value of space to mission and community
  • Advise all MassChallenge programs about office space and real estate


Who You Are and What You Bring

  • You have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or relevant field; advanced degree is a plus
  • You have 15+ years of experience in operations and leadership with proven success in finance, marketing and events, legal, office space, and human resources
  • You have a highly collaborative approach and ability to work across teams and functions to achieve success
  • You have experience as an engaging and motivating people manager
  • You have excellent communication, speaking, and writing skills
  • You have the ability to connect and engage with stakeholders at varying levels
