We are looking for an R&D Technician - Instrumentation to join our Engine R&D Lab. In this role, you will support research and development activities for our Waukesha and Jenbacher natural gas engine platforms (400–5000+ HP). You’ll collaborate with engineers and fellow technicians to install and maintain test cell instrumentation, configure, and calibrate data acquisition systems in a Research & Development laboratory. Our lab uses advanced technology to test engines across the full operating envelope, simulating real customer conditions to help develop cleaner, higher-performing engine products.
What you’ll do:
- Set up, calibrate, operate, and maintain instrumentation equipment and related hardware/software (e.g., sensors, data acquisition systems, and emissions measurement equipment)
- Perform routine system checks, verification tasks, and preventive maintenance.
- Document and maintain calibration and certification records.
- Track inventory of consumable instrumentation supplies and hardware.
- Assist in evaluating and recommending instrumentation and test equipment.
- Perform hands-on tasks such as soldering, connector crimping, and wiring.
What you’ll bring:
- Associate of Applied Science degree in electrical/electronic or mechatronics field (High school diploma GED plus an additional 2 years’ experience as a lab technician may be substituted for associate degree).
- Self-starter, continuous learner, reliable, and punctual.
- Demonstrated problem solving skills.
- Organizational skills required to effectively prioritize and execute multiple tasks and perform detail-oriented work.
- Experience diagnosing and repairing instrumentation and facility related equipment problems.
- Ability to install and calibrate basic instrumentation such as thermocouples and pressure transducers.
What will help you stand out:
- Experience with test lab emissions instrumentation, probes and heated sample lines. (e.g. AVL – AMA 5-Gas and SESAM FTIR)
- Hands-on experience and passion for reciprocating engines, components, and technology.
- Experience supporting data acquisition equipment and instrumentation such as: thermocouples, load cells, pressure transducers, LVDT’s, strain gauges, accelerometers, Siemens LMS, NI LabVIEW.
- Experience with documentation requirements for EPA 40 CFR part 1065 compliance.
- Demonstrated flexibility and success in work assignments requiring minimal supervision.
Additional Details:
- Location: Waukesha, WI
- Work Schedule: Onsite 5 days per week (Monday through Friday) 40 hrs. per week, paid hourly with some possibility for overtime.
- Visa Sponsorship: This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship now or in the foreseeable future.
- This position requires the ability to lift to 40 lbs. on an occasional basis.
