Job Summary:
The Controls Engineer Technician is a crucial part of the Welland Maintenance team, contributing significantly to our Maintenance Operating System and digital manufacturing initiatives for top-quality reciprocating gas engines.

Key Responsibilities:    
  • Provides assistance and support to Plant Electricians.
  • Undertakes specialized tasks encompassing electronic/electrical disciplines and mechanical work.
  • Designs, specifies, interfaces, assembles, wires, tests, and commissions new and existing electrical controls, machinery, and devices related to a production manufacturing facility.
  • Conducts routine electrical maintenance to complex electronic repairs on plant machinery and equipment.
  • Participates in both planned and unplanned plant and equipment power outages.
  • Handles calibration of instrumentation and tuning of control systems.
  • Backs-up and images machinery and equipment.
  • Replaces batteries of PLC, CNC, and other sensitive equipment.
  • Performs IR imaging on plant-wide equipment, prepares IR reports, and saves them to the server.
  • Assists with plant-wide machine connectivity.
  • Accurately documents repairs from service requests and PMs in the computerized maintenance management system.
  • Familiar with MES (asset) and converts service requests to work orders when necessary.
  • Liaises with external service providers or OEMs for machinery and equipment repair and overhauls as needed.
  • Attends specialized training for PLC ladder diagrams/logic, robot, machine controllers, OEM maintenance training, etc.
  • Reports any abnormal conditions of materials, products, or equipment to supervision.
  • Complies with all applicable health, safety, and environmental legislation and policies.
  • Performs 6s related tasks.
  • Additionally, the role involves supporting any other initiatives within the plant as needed. 
Qualifications/Requirements:
  • Minimum 3-year Diploma of Engineering Technology in Electronics or Automation.
  • 3+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment concerning Mechanical Assembly, Automation and Robotics, Machine Repair, Hydraulic Systems, Pneumatic systems, PLC and CNC-based control and logic systems, SCADA, HMI and Servo, AC and DC Drives.
  • Experience with programming and troubleshooting PLC’s.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Red Seal 309A Electrician Construction/Maintenance or 442A Industrial Electrician certificate of qualification is preferred.
  • CNC Manufacturing experience or industrial atmosphere.
  • Experience with Rockwell, Siemens, Fanuc & Okuma controllers.
  • Experience with Multi-axes robots (Fanuc).
  • Familiarity with various CNC machines, including but not limited to Okuma, Makino, Nile Simmons, Mori Seiki, and WFL.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross-functional team members.
  • Proven ability to adapt to changing priorities and working conditions.
  • Ability to work shutdowns or overtime when required.

Work Environment:

  • Heavy industrial, requiring 100% of the time per week in the plant. Required to wear personal protective equipment.
  • Exposure to noise; heights, lighting conditions, materials, products, and by-products associated with the manufacture of engine components.
  • Required to climb stairs, and ladders to access elevations, able to crouch for periods, push, pull, lift and turn while carrying tools, material and equipment in various parts of the facilities.

Reporting Structure:

  • The successful candidate will report to the respective Facilities & Maintenance Support Leader and will assist and take direction from the Controls and Automation Manufacturing Engineering Specialist.
