Overview

The Alpuim Research Group focuses on CVD growth, transfer, and device fabrication, using 2D materials, clean-room technology, and Raman imaging for structural characterisation.

SR&TD project specifications: INL participates in the Defect engineering in quantum memristors for neuromorphic computing (DefCom2D) project funded by National Funds through the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT):

a)   Name of the project: Defect engineering in quantum memristors for neuromorphic computing (DefCom2D);

b)     Reference number: 2024.12604.UTA;

c) Description: This project targets the development of defect-engineered hBN memristors for neuromorphic computing, mimicking the brain’s energy-efficient information processing. It investigates how defects such as vacancies and grain boundaries influence the resistive switching behavior in hBN, using plasma treatments, electrical and spectroscopic characterization, and first-principles modeling. The optimized devices will be integrated into crossbar arrays to demonstrate in-memory computing and synaptic learning tasks. Combining INL’s expertise in materials engineering with UT Austin’s modeling capabilities, the work aims to establish hBN memristors as scalable building blocks for next-generation, energy-efficient AI hardware;

d)     Scientific Area: Advanced Computing.
