Position Summary:
Under the direct supervision of a licensed physician or surgeon, or within a training environment, the Histotechnician will assist with responsibilities associated with accessioning and the processing of specimens for clinical testing and will provide general support for the laboratory following established policies and procedures.
Responsibilities Histotechnician I and II:
- Receives, organizes and processes clinical specimens accurately. Identifies worksheet, computer, and specimen problems and demonstrates ability to either resolve or elevate to licensed personnel appropriately
- Prepares and organizes written data, printouts, and other documents for pathologist review
- Prepares testing equipment, assists with preventative maintenance
- Reports problems concerning individual tasks, equipment, and supplies to the Laboratory Supervisor or the Lead Technologist to ensure timely resolution
- Performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by a pathologist(s) according to established SOP’s
- Assists in embedding and/ or re-embedding processed tissue in paraffin, coverslipping of stained slides either manually or automated, in operating automated equipment per SOP, and in reagent and solution preparation
- Performs filing of finished blocks, slides, and paperwork
- Responds promptly to pathologists, managers/supervisors/lead, technologists, and administrative requests
- Read and understand all SOPs related to the department and adhere to all department rules and protocols
- Maintain laboratory in a clean, functional state, as well as cleaning or performing / scheduling equipment and instrument maintenance, as required
- Demonstrates initiative in making suggestions to improve efficiency and productivity and provides consistent feedback
- Attends department meetings and company in-service trainings to enhance knowledge on testing and systems
Histotechnician II additional responsibilities:
- Demonstrates proficiency and accuracy in al responsibilities of a Histotechnician I and maintains knowledge of all functions
- May train laboratory assistants in the department
- Participate in and initiate process improvement methods and initiatives
- Assists Histotechnologist(s) in performing complex tasks or procedures if needed.
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent; Some college preferred (i.e. biology, chemistry)
Experience:
Histotechnician I: One to three years of experience equivalent to a Laboratory Technician or Laboratory Assistant preferred
Histotechnician II: Four years of experience equivalent to a Laboratory Technician or Laboratory Assistant preferred
Qualification Requirements:
- Basic understanding of laboratory techniques preferred
- Basic understanding of MS Office programs
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with a strong attention to detail
- Ability to work independently
- Must be able to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment and maintain production and quality standards
- Must be able to work in a biohazard environment, follow safety policies and standards outlined in the Safety Manual, and be able to lift up to 50 pounds
- No travel requirement
