Job Description

As the Therapeutic Activities Coordinator, you will plan, direct, and coordinate recreation-based treatment programs for hospital patients. You will assist the patients in achieving a different state of mind and develop positive physical, cognitive, emotional, and psychological skills through activities and experiences. Through a variety of techniques designed to create an atmosphere of sociability, such as arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, and music, you will provide a means of creative expression and facilitate the learning skills for patients during hospitalization and after discharge in the community. Ideally, this person will be compassionate, organized, creative, work well within a team and have effective communication skills.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Provide therapeutic individual and group therapy
  • Participate in the admissions and assessment process
  • Provide ongoing recreation assessments
  • Ensure patient’s rights and privacy are maintained

General Responsibilities:

  • Plans and implements activities to meet patients’ specific needs, including group and individual participation
  • Directs and participates in instrumental and vocal music activities designed to meet patients’ physical needs, such as solo or group singing, music listening, attending concerts, or rhythmic and other creative music activities
  • Coordinates the recruitment, retention and involvement of volunteers to work with patients
  • Coordinates community involvement in the facility
  • Documents activities as required by state and federal regulation
  • Documents and reports potential and actual issues that affect quality of care and services

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in therapeutic recreation, recreation therapy, or music therapy required
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, CTRS certified by the NCTRC
  • 2+ years of recreation or activities experience or training within a skilled nursing and/or behavioral health environment
  • 2+ years of geriatric experience preferred

Working Conditions:

  • General office environment in a behavioral health hospital
  • May require standing up or walking for up to 75% of the time
  • Required to use assistance when attempting to assist, lift or carry objects over 25 lbs.
