Health Standards Organization (HSO) is searching for Technical Committee members who are committed to advancing culturally safe health services and addressing Indigenous-specific racism and discrimination.

Position Summary/Description

HSO is forming a new Cultural Safety and Humility Technical Committee (TC) as part of HSO’s development of the new National Standard of Canada CAN/HSO 75001:2026 Cultural Safety and Humility. The new standard will specify the requirements for governing bodies, organizational leaders, and teams in health and social service organizations to provide culturally safe services to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples and communities and address Indigenous-specific racism in service delivery.

HSO is seeking applicants to the TC with lived experience and a longstanding commitment to the principles of Truth, Rights, and Reconciliation to strengthen healthcare systems across Canada.

HSO standards enable strong health care systems by providing the public, providers, and policy makers with a foundation that promotes high quality health services where it matters most. To accomplish this, HSO brings best evidence, experts, and wise practices to the table to inform a consensus-based, collaborative approach to standards development. As a member of the TC, you will be part of the development process that supports ongoing quality improvement measures in health care systems.

By working with HSO to develop standards, you will be shaping the future of health services, resulting in a lasting impact on healthcare worldwide. Through the standard development process, you will be able to connect and collaborate with other individuals committed to advancing cultural safety and humility and addressing Indigenous-specific racism.

In your role as a TC member, you will:
  • Contribute your expertise, knowledge, and perspectives to the development of health standards.
  • Collaborate with other TC members and interest holders on the development or revision of HSO standards related to cultural safety and humility.
  • Advise and reach consensus on the topics for inclusion and the content of the standards through a series of meetings.
  • Promote the implementation of standards once published.
  • Provide guidance to HSO on the interpretation of content within standards.
  • Provide guidance to HSO on emerging areas of importance related to cultural safety and humility.
Desired experiences and skills
TC members should:
  • Identify with one of these four interest holder categories:
  • Patients: Individuals who have significant and recent experience with Indigenous health and cultural safety. The term “patient” is used to identify individuals who participate in, and engage with, health systems and services. This could include Knowledge Keepers, Elders, community members, caregivers, and family members.
  • Providers: Representatives from health care organizations or other potential end-users of the standard, including Healers and administrative, clinical, and non-clinical roles.
  • Policy Makers: Members from First Nations, Inuit, or Métis governing bodies and associations; non-Indigenous government ministries; regulators; or government-funded bodies such as health quality councils.
  • General Interest: Those with subject-matter expertise in applied research or representatives from private-sector industry.
  • Have lived experience and a longstanding commitment to advance culturally safe health services and address Indigenous-specific racism in service delivery.
  • Have demonstrated experience promoting mutual trust and respect in collaborative settings.
  • Are able to commit to the time investment and requirements for TC activities.
You’ll stand out if you...
  • Have previous experience working in a consensus-based team model.
  • Have previous experience developing standards or other policy documents.
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to the principles of Truth, Rights, and Reconciliation.
  • Have strong critical thinking, judgement, and management skills.
  • Approach everything with a focus on innovation and quality improvement.
Financial Assistance – All positions on the Technical Committee are voluntary. An honorarium is provided to all patient and family members participating on HSO’s Technical Committees. HSO also provides reimbursement to Technical Committee members for expenses related to attending any in-person meetings. Additional information on membership, including patient and family honorariums, will be provided if you are selected as a Technical Committee member.
