Position at Hood Distribution

Distributor Service, Inc. (DSI) distributes the raw materials used by professional cabinet builders and woodworking manufacturers. DSI consists of eight national distribution hubs within five states, providing distribution primarily within a 100-mile radius between facilities located in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. DSI was recently acquired and will be transitioning into the Hood Distribution family.
Hood Distribution, a division of Hood Industries, is a wholesale distributor of hardwood lumber & plywood as well as related specialty products. Hood Distribution currently consists of sixteen locations within fifteen states, providing distribution into Arizona, North Texas, the eastern U.S. as well as the Caribbean markets.
The People Operations Manager will lead and direct the routine Human Resources functions of the department including hiring and interviewing staff, administrating pay, benefits, and leave, and enforcing company policies and practices.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Human Resource Coordinator reports to the People Operations Manager.
  • Partners with Managers to assist in recruitment, to include interviews, hiring, and orientation/onboarding of new employees.
  • Oversees the daily workflow of the department.
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.
  • Provide support and guidance to staff.
Duties/Responsibilities:   
  • Partners with the leadership team to understand and execute the organization’s human resource and talent strategy particularly as it relates to current and future talent needs, recruiting, retention, and succession planning.
  • Provides support and guidance to management and other staff when complex, specialized, and sensitive issues arise; may be required to administer and execute routine tasks in delicate circumstances such as investigating allegations of wrongdoing, and terminations.
  • Manage the talent acquisition process, which may include recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of qualified job applicants, particularly for managerial, exempt, and professional roles; collaborates with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings.
    • Manages the pre-employment process to include the pre-employment drug and/or alcohol screening and background check.
  • Oversees employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; review policies and practices to maintain to maintain compliance.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
  • Oversee Payroll Processing and Employee Compensation.
  • Keeps job descriptions up to date and accurate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • DSI will be transitioning into Hood Distribution and the duties may change.

Required skills/experience: 
•       Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related field preferred. 
•       A minimum of 5+ years of experience in human resources at the professional/management level.  Distribution/manufacturing environment experience preferred.   
•       Experience in coaching and mentoring employees. 
•       Broad knowledge of laws, regulations, policies, procedures and practical application of Human Resources functions. 
•       Experience dealing with significant employee relations issues including investigations. 
•       Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. 
•       SHRM or HRCI Certification is a plus.
