Position at Hood Plywood

This role is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a 966 wheel loader to support operations including log handling, inventory management, equipment inspections, and maintaining material flow to the mill.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Complete and document required pre-shift and post-shift equipment inspections.
  • Safely and efficiently operate the 966 loader in a high-volume log yard environment, including sorting, stacking, and organizing logs for production.
  • Load logs onto the log deck to maintain a consistent flow of material to the mill for processing.
  • Participate in cross-training on the Log Loader and demonstrate the ability to safely and effectively operate the equipment as needed to support operations.
  • Assist L-90 operators with log inventory management, material flow, and yard organization.
  • Monitor fluid levels, fuel, tire condition, and equipment performance.
  • Report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, and maintenance needs promptly.
  • Follow all company safety policies and applicable OSHA, lockout/tagout, and environmental requirements.
  • Support mill production goals by minimizing downtime and maintaining efficient material flow.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, other log deck employees, and Log Loader Operators to coordinate work and support safe and efficient operations.
  • Perform required hazard assessments and maintain awareness of pedestrian, mobile equipment, and vehicle traffic in the log yard.
  • Immediately report accidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, and property damage.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous experience operating heavy industrial equipment, mobile equipment, or similar machinery is required. Experience operating wheel loaders or log loaders is preferred.
  • Previous work experience in an industrial environment is required.
  • Must maintain a valid operator’s license.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work as a team.
  • Ability to work effectively and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to learn new equipment and processes and follow established safe operating procedures. 
  • Able to work nights, weekends, holiday, and overtime as required.  

Physical Requirements / Work Environment:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating mobile equipment and to use hand and foot controls throughout the shift.
  • Ability to frequently enter and exit the loader cab and climb steps using handholds.
  • Ability to frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, and twist while performing inspections and other assigned duties.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Visual acuity, depth perception, and peripheral awareness sufficient to safely operate equipment around logs, pedestrians, vehicles, and other mobile equipment.
  • Ability to work in an outdoor industrial environment with exposure to weather conditions, dust, noise, uneven surfaces, and moving equipment.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all site safety requirements.
