Hill + Knowlton Strategies is looking for a dynamic Account Director to join its Communications + Public Engagement team in Ottawa. The successful candidate will be the key contact for clients and ensure we deliver quality work and satisfaction is maintained at the highest level. By applying strategic thinking and oversight to client programs, you will deploy the firm’s resources to achieve client objectives and monitor results regularly.

The Account Director applies strategic thinking to client programs, deploys resources to achieve client objectives and oversees execution of programs.  Some Account Directors also manage people, assessing their performance and supporting their personal and professional development. As an Account Director, you are nimble, show initiative, look for new business opportunities and have developed sector, specialty or other expertise that move H+K forward, consistent with our depth + breadth strategy and commitment to be Always in Beta. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develops client strategies and provides ongoing counsel 
  • Applies the H+K Way and seven-step process when developing client plans and develops plans in collaboration with a creative strategist 
  • Collaborates with the Innovation + Creativity Hub, The Studio and Data + Analytics Team to develop and execute client programs  
  • Works collaboratively with Sector Leads, Specialty Experts and other leaders across the business 
  • Manages client teams, overseeing all elements of a program or project, ensuring client satisfaction, anticipating client needs, opportunities and challenges and managing them as they arise 
  • Accountable for client budgets, adjusting as needed based on changes in the client’s environment and being transparent about the impact on budget and timelines 
  • Conducts account and project assessments to gain insights for future programs  
  • Knowledgeable of current events, sector and service trends with an eye to how they will impact clients 
  • Creates and maintains productive relationships with stakeholders relevant to clients, identifying opportunities for clients to collaborate effectively 
  • Delivers insights and persuasive counsel to clients that advances their objectives 
  • Develops new approaches to meet client needs 
  • Applies H+K innovations (new products and services) to solve client problems and create new opportunities 
  • Pursues new business opportunities and regularly participates in the development of new business proposals and pitches 
  • Proposes new services and ideas to existing clients 
  • Leads elements of H+K marketing activities in collaboration with local and national leaders 
  • Identifies and proposes ways to advance company, office, team and client goals 
  • Uses common systems for key business activities and champions them with colleagues 
  • Understands business metrics to evaluate our business and uses them to assess account profitability, performance and utilization of account teams 
  • Proactively follows and shares sector and service trends with colleagues and clients and recommends how to apply these insights to client projects  
  • Recognized internally and by clients as having sector, specialty or other expertise that moves H+K forward 
  • Networks with colleagues and externally, building relationships that will advance H+K’s business goals 
  • Provides leadership, making recommendations to enhance teamwork and employee engagement 
  • Supports colleagues and direct reports (if relevant) by providing timely and constructive feedback to advance their professional development goals, engaging in difficult conversations when needed to provide feedback and problem-solve difficult situations 
  • Collaborates with others nationally, makes meaningful connections with senior leaders  
  • Actively supports H+K internal programs 
  • Is an ambassador for H+K, identifying and recommending talent and supporting recruitment and retention by participating in interviews, being a buddy to new employees, mentoring and coaching existing employees, networking with peers outside of H+K 
  • Establishes clear career path and goals including identifying self-training and development needs 
  • Participates in learning + development and conducts training workshops in their area(s) of expertise
What you’ll need to get here:
  • 8+ years' experience in communications in the corporate and/or public engagement space; agency experience a plus 
  • Proven track record  of success and specialized knowledge in developing and managing  corporate communications programs that meet business objectives
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and business development mindset, actively contributing to the growth of existing accounts and leading new business proposals and pitches
  • Superb written and verbal communications skills
  • Proven account/project management skills including budget management
  • Experience managing account profitability, ensuring the staffing mix on the account is appropriate 
  • Direct experience with stakeholder communications, media relations and public engagement
