Job Description and Performance Standards

 

Title:  Psychiatric Technician 553435181

Department:  Westcott Center

Reports To:  RN     

Status:  PRN

Schedule:  Days of week vary - 7am - 7pm or 7pm - 7am

JOB SUMMARY

Assists licensed nursing staff in providing direct patient care appropriate to the age group served ranging from adult to geriatric patients functioning as a nursing attendant, and active member of the Multidisciplinary Treatment Team under the direction and supervision of the RN.  Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development and assess data reflective of the patient’s current status in relation to their age specific needs.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  High School

Licensure:  Certification as a nurses’ aide preferred. CPR required.

Experience:  One year in a position which would be supportive to the responsibilities of a Psychiatric Tech; would consider AA degree in lieu of experience, enrollment as a nursing student or in medical field (EMT).

Skills:  Must have good communication skills, organizational skills, be able to prioritize tasks, and be knowledgeable of medical terminology.  Clinical:  Must be able to measure vital signs accurately, monitor and measure intake and output accurately, monitor, explain and ensure NPO status, monitor and estimate fluid and food intake with accuracy, implement basic physical hygiene care.  Ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs that are age appropriate. 

Ability to select proper instrumentation/supplies appropriate for age group of patient served.  Must maintain active Crisis Prevention Institute Certification.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Daily lifting and transferring of patients from bed to chairs, sometimes necessary to physically restrain patients.  Should have a high degree of self-control, both emotionally and physically and not be easily angered.  Walk, see, hear, emotionally stable, able to learn, problem-solve, bend, lift, push.  Stressful working conditions in patient care area.
