Job Description and Performance Standards


Title: Lab Manager 554021574

Department:  Laboratory

Reports To:  Director, Laboratory Services

Shift: 8:30am - 5:00pm / Monday - Friday 

Status: Full-Time


Assists the Lab Administration in the overall operations of the Laboratory to insure quality, cost effective laboratory tests; directs and supervises the work of all staff of the Department to ensure their clinical competency and adherence to the Medical Center's policies, procedures and philosophy.  Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served. Must demonstrate knowledge of age dependent expected values and access data reflective of the patient’s current status in relation to their age specific needs. 



Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or one of the natural sciences preferred. Degree must be obtained within two years of hire.

Licensure: Current certification as a Medical Technologist, ASCP or equivalent. 

Experience: Four or more years as a Medical Technologist in a highly complex Laboratory. Must maintain current certification throughout employment at Hamilton Medical Center. Must meet Georgia State Laws of licensure of clinical laboratories.

Skills:  A self-motivated individual with good communication, problem solving and organizational skills.  Ability to obtain and interpret pertinent information in terms of the patient’s needs that are age-appropriate.  Ability to select proper instrumentation/supplies appropriate for the age group of patient served.  Demonstrates consistent ability to perform clinical skills necessary in the care and treatment of a variety of ages of patients, particularly focusing on the neonate, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.



May be exposed to disease-bearing specimens, hazardous chemicals and fumes and other hazards normally associated with a clinical laboratory setting.  May be required to work evenings or weekends to meet deadlines. Shares administrative call, which requires availability 24 hrs/day and is subject to callback when situation warrants.  Minimum bending, standing and stooping required.  Some lifting, phone skills, some CRT work, ability to read handwritten reports.  (E)
