Job Description and Performance Standards

Title:  Director Hospice 554401040

Department:  Hospice

Reports To:  Vice President, Post-Acute Care Services

Shift:  8:30am-5:00pm Monday-Friday

Status:  Full Time


The Director of Hospice is an experienced professional responsible for the planning, organization, and directing of the operations and clinical practice of Hospice.  The Director communicates the mission, vision, and commitment statements of the organization to the staff.  The Director provides support and encourages staff to act with authority and responsibility with the organization.  The Director advocates continuous improvement in staff performances, assumes fiscal responsibility for all budgets, and serves as a liaison with the medical community and with community leaders to promote appropriate utilization of the departments’ services.  The Director functions within the established organizational structure and through effective collaborative relationships.


Education:  Baccalaureate or Master’s Degree preferred in Nursing, Business Administration or health-related field. 

Licensure:  Current RN license (if applicable) from the State of Georgia or current temporary permit, applicable to Nurse. 

Experience:  Minimum of four years of progressive management and professional experience in a health care setting to include budgeting and profit and loss statement management. 

Skills:  Position requires management and ability to supervise various professional personnel that function in the department.  Professional competence and knowledge is required to evaluate cost effective, compassionate, customer focused patient care. 

Requires the ability to identify issues, make sound judgments and decisions, tackle complex assignments, demonstrate leadership, show initiative and risk taking, planning and resource management, interpersonal skills, communication skills, adaptability and staff development.  Requires knowledge of the accreditation process to maintain certifications to comply with CMS and Joint Commission standards. 

Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations, and procedures to administer patient care.  Working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public are essential.  Expertise in marketing and promotion of community services is additional skill.

Key Functions:  Directs and coordinates overall development and administration of Hospice Departments consistent with the goals and objectives of the Medical Center. 

Initiates and coordinates the strategic direction for the Hospice Department with the development and implementation of Strategic Planning on an annual basis. 

Assures high quality timely and effective service delivery throughout the Department. 

Continually analyzes and evaluates service delivery in the department to assure compliance to standards. 

Formulates annual budget for Home Health and Hospice Departments (i.e., salary, expenses and capital) based on objectives that are congruent with Hospital and departmental goals within established time frame.
