Job Description and Performance Standards
Title: Financial Counselor 339005048
Department: Central Business Office
Reports To: Collection Manager
Shift: 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday - Friday
Status: Full Time
Explains financial responsibilities for services received, payment options and collection procedures to patients and/or parties responsible for payment. Acts as a liaison between patients, patients’ relatives and the healthcare organization. Counsels patients regarding insurance benefits and recommends alternative sources of payment and/or financial assistance when appropriate. Acts as an advocate for the patient with insurance carriers. Assists with the collection of pre-payments. Identifies and resolves issues related to registration, financial clearance, insurance company authorization requirements, billing, government regulations and HMC policies and processes. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. May lead and direct the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Communication may take place via mail, email or telephone but primarily in person.
Education: Completion of a high school diploma. College level courses preferred.
Experience: 2 to 4 years experience in the field or equivalent experience in a hospital, medical office or customer service setting.
Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively interact with internal and external customers. Must be able to resolve problems independently, with little management oversight. Ability to interpret and follow oral and written instructions, policies, guidelines and standards. Ability to use good judgment in the absence of formal guidelines, policies or procedures. Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively. Working knowledge of medical A/R software programs, Word, Excel and Power Point. Must be detail oriented and able to demonstrate competence in basic math concepts.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Office environment with constant exposure to the public. Good health, ability to work under pressure with constant interruptions. Long hours sitting, some lifting and walking. Requires analytical skills such as problem analysis. Very stressful, constantly receiving requests or complaints from patients. Must be able to remain calm and polite while analyzing detailed information and taking appropriate action.
