Paralegal - 8-month Position

The Paralegal will provide support to the General Counsel and other department attorneys and handle special projects. This position is a full-time position with benefits extending through June 2022, with a possibility of converting to a full-time Paralegal position on the legal team after the project ends.  

This is a unique opportunity to quickly establish expertise in a variety of day-to-day media and intellectual property legal matters for the company. The Paralegal will have direct contact with employees across various departments, from Editorial to Marketing to Communications. In addition, the Paralegal will assist with Legal Operations and work directly with the General Counsel to develop new processes and legal resources for the company.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate compliance with applicable advertising and marketing regulations (including for social media). Review and draft marketing-related agreements including terms of use, influencer agreements and guidelines, ad insertion orders, and sweepstakes/contest rules. Understanding of data-based advertising and direct-to-consumer marketing a plus.
  • Draft and negotiate a variety of agreements based on existing templates, including NDAs, basic licensing agreements, movie tie-in agreements, charitable contributions, quitclaims, releases and similar agreements.
  • Draft cease and desist letters and conduct research on piracy, counterfeits and potential infringement of intellectual property.
  • Work with outside counsel on trademark applications and renewals.
  • Assist in managing Legal Operations and streamlining workflow, including contract and document management. Provide litigation support as needed.
  • Support the company’s privacy compliance program, including compliance with state and federal laws governing privacy and data security. Assist in updating privacy policies and notices.
  • Collaborate regularly with team members, attorneys and outside counsel to ensure timely execution.
  • Handle special projects and other duties as assigned, including assisting with creating training presentations on select topics.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Bachelor’s or Paralegal degree preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to read contracts and legal documents
  • IAPP CIPP/US certification and/or Legal Operations certification preferred but not necessary.
  • Highly organized and able to juggle multiple priorities while attending to details and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong research, writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic understanding of U.S. rules and regulations relating to marketing and regulatory matters.
  • Ability to interpret and prepare legal documents and communications.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) skills.
  • Demonstrated natural ease and effectiveness when dealing and liaising with clients and colleagues at all levels.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of discretion and confidentiality.
