Working with our dogs will inspire you.  We put our clients first and seek to exceed their expectations by supporting them with exceptional dogs trained to meet their unique needs, so they can live the life they want to live.  It all starts in our Genetics Department at the Canine Development Center where the journey of our dogs begins.

As the Lead Genetics Data Scientist, you will focus on dog health, behavior and production data.  You will play a critical role in ensuring that our breeding program produces healthy, high-performing guide dogs. You will collaborate with various departments to analyze genetic data, assess inherited traits, and ensure the optimal selection of dogs for our program. Your work will directly contribute to improving the health, temperament, and long-term success of the Guiding Eyes colony and the larger guide dog industry.
 
The Role
  • Oversee integrity of genetic data; ensure raw data, including survey data, is complete and accurate and that proper data cleanup is done as needed
  • Maintain protocols through monitoring
  • Create data reports and datasets using Excel, beginner SQL queries
  • Monitor and communicate changes in data trends that impact puppy production, health and behavior
  • Development of a dashboard for the Genetics Department to enable others to recognize trends as they happen
  • Serve as the point of contact for Staff across the organization as well as be the outside source of genetic project support
  • Be the point of communication with the IT Team for modifications needed within the database and other software used by the Genetics Department such as the International Working Dog Registry (IWDR)
 
Qualifications You Will Need 
  • B.S. in a STEM field preferred
  • Three plus years of experience in maintaining data quality preferred
  • Working knowledge of report and query building
  • Experience with statistical/financial analysis a plus
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs; specifically Excel and PowerPoint, beginner level SQL skills required, Salesforce savvy and beginner level R a plus
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills as well as strong organizational skills
  • Mission-oriented, critical thinker, and self-starter with the demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and interact with individuals of all levels, both internally and externally
  • Must be comfortable around large, active dogs

Salary Range (annually) $80k - $100k
