Working with our dogs will inspire you.  We put our clients first and seek to exceed their expectations by supporting them with exceptional dogs trained to meet their unique needs, so they can live the life they want to live.  It all starts in our Genetics Department at the Canine Development Center where the journey of our dogs begins.
 
As a Geneticist, you will focus on increasing the overall success in breeding future guide dogs.  To do this, you will develop and implement measurable breeding objectives to monitor success, as well as collaborate to create research and development opportunities to benefit the long-term success of the Guiding Eyes colony and the larger guide dog industry.
 
The Role 
  • Colony management; direct the selection and breeding process of the Guiding Eyes colony
  • Collaborate with the Veterinary team to seek accurate and complete phenotypic results to drive selection
  • Monitor progress and methods for selection and breeding to keep in line with best practices; track changes over time for improvement of important traits
  • Develop and modify genetic models for traits used in selection, as needed, to calculate Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) using phenotypes and genomic data
  • Investigate and initiate opportunities to work with Universities, specialists, researchers, and other guide dog schools to further the success of the colony through collaboration and contribution to research efforts
  • Coordinate with the fundraising team to create new grants and research funding opportunities to benefit the colony and guide dog industry
  • Assist in continued software development and management of data integrity
  • Provide the right number of dogs with the desired traits to fulfill the needs of the Training Department based on adapting trends over time
 
Qualifications You Will Need 
  • Doctorate preferred (DVM, PhD) and/or Master's Degree or equivalent in Animal Breeding, and Quantitative Genetic Analyses using animal models
  • At least two (2) years of relevant experience and proven success working with animal models
  • Working knowledge of coding scripts and query building
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs; Salesforce savvy a plus
  • Ability to multitask and adapt quickly to changing priorities
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills as well as strong organizational skills
  • Mission-oriented, critical thinker, and self-starter with the demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and interact with individuals of all levels, both internally and externally
  • Must be comfortable around large, active dogs
 
Salary Range (annually) $110k - $160k
