The role

The Planning Director is responsible for driving the delivery of best-in-class planning within their team, leading and coordinating agency specialists and team members, building strong, mutually beneficial relationships and demonstrating sound understanding of client and business communication needs.   


About you

To be successful in this role, you’ll be able to demonstrate:

  • That you are an experienced media planner, able to understand client’s business challenges and to engage strategists and specialists to develop an OEP planning strategy to address them.
  • Clarity in conceiving & delivering compelling media recommendations to clients, supported by robust communications planning skills and storytelling.
  • Advanced expertise in industry planning tools & insight gathering, to build a deep understanding of the consumer, the client’s business and its specific Purchase Journey opportunities.
  • Ability to articulate to clients the key deliverables around campaigns, to confidently manage timelines and prioritise deadlines
  • Ability to define the tasks for media, tech and content investment, develop channel roles and investment priorities based around tasks. 
  • That you are seasoned in managing activation teams & clients, to keep abreast of how campaigns are performing and able to lead on macro course correction if required. 
  • Able to ensure investment decisions point to the precise moments in the purchase journey where they can deliver the greatest impact. 
  • Sound financial awareness, including forecasting, updating trackers, budget control, query oversee and the impact your role has on agency profitability.
  • Extensive experience in people management. Puts in place training, development and feedback programmes that ensures the ongoing development of Managers/Executives.  



About the role

In this role you’ll be responsible for:


  • Building and maintaining client and agency relationships at a mid-senior level, to ensure a comprehensive understanding of stakeholders of client business
  • Demonstrating complete control of, and immersion in, the clients’ business, working to build more upstream relationships outside of core day-to-day marketing team to embed Wavemaker as a valued partner throughout the client business network
  • Delivering best-in-class strategy and planning that reflects the comms strategy; writing and sharing inspiring, actionable briefs which allow our specialists (Content, Audience Science, data analytics) to create industry-leading solutions.
  • Apply WM’s planning philosophy across all client work, utilising a broad set of internal tools (inc. [m]Insight and maximise) as well as external tools to build a deep understanding of the consumer, the client’s business and its specific opportunities.  
  • Work with Activation teams to keep abreast of how campaigns are performing, spot related opportunities & issues, and course-correct accordingly
  • Lead your team, keeping people motivated and engaged and ensure a training and development plan is in place for Account Manager and Executive. Manage upwards, by being an invaluable eye on the day-to-day for Clients Lead.
  • Prioritise the workload of the team to ensure client requirements are executed in timely, professional, efficient manner.
  • Actively participate in new business projects and pitches and ongoing training.
