With 400 people based in Ho Chi Minh City, GroupM’s primary purpose is to maximize performance of WPP’s media agencies by operating as leader and collaborator in investment, content creation, digital, finance, talent, proprietary tool development and other business-critical capabilities. GroupM’s focus is to shape the next era of media. The Chief Investment Officer will be fully responsible and accountable for the Investment community within GroupM and the associated revenue targets.

This is a pivotal role within GroupM and will be tasked to lead structural and attitudinal change as we enhance our operating model while continuing to innovate and drive opportunities for growth, with ultimate responsibility for providing leadership across the teams comprising:

  • Group Investment Strategy & Negotiations across all media
  • Media Supply
  • Investment Operations

In addition, the Chief Investment officer of GroupM will work with the key management team to develop GroupM and its agencies into the industry leading force in all aspects of investment.

  1. Joining the business in a key leadership role as GroupM transforms around a clear vision to be responsible for shaping the next era of media where advertising works better for people.
  2. Working in a market that is high-growth and one that has high-potential for GroupM. The opportunity to develop a GroupM Investment offering in an emerging market, whilst learning about, and dealing with the challenges that come with a state-controlled system and media landscape.
  3. Leading an increasingly important function within GroupM Vietnam with the full support of both the leadership team, and the Agency communities. Both improved client value, and product development via Media supply are of increasing significance to our clients and the business support reflects the desire for us to continue to succeed and improve further in this area.


  • To drive the best possible outcome always for GroupM with media partners through a client-focussed, commercial and future facing lens.
  • Full ownership of and accountability for the GroupM investment revenue line with mandatory quarterly and annual reporting.
  • To actively drive and contribute to the development of the investment strategies, specialist businesses, and the approach to inventory and partner relationships across the GroupM business.
  • Lead the investment SLT so that it functions as a harmonious, collective, responsible community. The ability to see issues and to spot opportunities to grow and re-purpose the investment team (EG - TV Hub).
  • Treat all media partners fairly and with respect, ensuring optimal working relationships.
  • To function as a valuable, contributing member of the GroupM Exco.
  • Contribute pro-actively to New Business opportunities and pitches, with specific oversight on pricing and investment components.
  • Constantly strive to improve professional standards & capability across GroupM Investment.




  • Lives and breathes the GroupM values always. Leads by example in relation to work/life integration and wellbeing.
  • Ensures that there is regular, motivating communication to their leadership team regarding company updates.
  • Ensures direct reports understand the expectations of their role and sets and tracks KPI’s accordingly.
  • Coaches their direct reports and other key staff members as required.
  • Supports the team in managing client and agency expectations.
  • Fosters a solution-focused culture when it comes to issues/challenges – in turn excels in trouble shooting and conflict management.
  • Work with the talent and HR team to ensure ongoing training, retention and recruitment.


  • Approaches all financial decisions with strong commercial acumen.
  • Identify and develop new areas of income generation from investment appropriate to the Vietnamese market.
  • Deliver the local objectives for GroupM Vietnam’s investment revenue in a manner that is compliant with regional and global policy.
  • Effectively and clearly communicate potential risks in a timely manner.
  • Improve GroupM and Agency operational performance, structure, and processes with greater efficiencies in the investment set-up.


  • Define and execute the GroupM annual negotiations with media vendors across all channels. Ensure that the strategy and its delivery are communicated consistently throughout the year.
  • Ensure all process is up to date, best in class, and adhered to 100% of the time – especially around implementational planning and control.
  • Work with Head of GroupM Product & Services to identify client needs and supply potential to deliver those needs
  • To further develop our Audio-Visual product offerings given this areas importance to Vietnamese consumer behaviours.


  • Builds trusted advisor relationships with all senior media vendors, ensuring that GroupM has a positive and respected reputation with media owners and tech providers
  • Liaise and collaborate with Agency leadership to help grow their business and build synergy.
  • Be a public spokesperson on industry issues and to become an Investment voice of GroupM with a strong, high profile and positive reputation and personality in the market.
  • Provide support to agency investment teams in the management of media auditors.

What we are looking for from you

  • A seasoned business leader who with proven capability in managing a large diverse team, including cross functional team and multi discipline teams.
  • Highly numerate with first class negotiation skills. Able to construct negotiation strategies to deliver on defined objectives. The ability to persuade and convince and to selectively choose trade-offs to secure good business results.
  • People Skills - The ability to handle people at all levels and in various situations calmly and professionally. The ability to generate respect, trust, and confidence, and a sense of purpose from peers and subordinates. The ability to bring out the best in people.
  • Business Acumen - The ability to identify opportunities and optimise profitability on behalf of the agency and its clients. The ability to take both short and long-term views and reconcile these to achieve business targets.
  • Organisational Ability - Promote and ensure forward thinking and planning is carried through due to the right deployment of resources. To balance long-term objectives with short-term requirements.
  • Decision Making - Strong ability to identify key issues, analyse situations and make a balanced decision with foresight and imagination.
  • Resilience - The ability to tolerate pressure and the capacity to handle several issues all at one time. The capacity to be patient.
  • The ability to exercise initiative, self-motivation and persistence.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Background & requirements for the role

  • Highly knowledgeable on the media agency business with at least 15 years of media market experience.
  • Comfortable with handling (up to) C-level clients and agency management.
  • Strong market relationship and a reputation for building deep and effective partnerships.
  • Able to manage multiple stakeholders needs. Experienced/ Understanding of working in a matrix, multi market organization of the scale of GroupM & WPP.
  • Ability to guide and inspire the team/direct reports understanding strengths and weaknesses and always working to get the best from the team in a positive manner.
  • Inspiring communicator with clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to deliver excellent results consistently.
  • Focused and able to maintain perspective.
  • Excellent non-verbal and verbal communication skills.
