Job Description: 

The role of the IT Disaster Recovery Manager is to ensure the company is prepared to recover key IT systems in the event of a disaster and communicate areas of risk where recoverability is unknown or uncertain. The individual will provide leadership in coordinating, assessing, developing & communicating recovery environment requirements and contingency plans associated with the company’s Data Center current, in plan, and new activities, to appropriate technology groups, resulting in recommendations to enable timely, effective decisions regarding hardware / software recovery planning. Provide very complex project leadership between the technology groups and other company business units, emphasizing regular direct communication with application support management.

Primary Duties and Functions:

Strategy & Planning

  • Work closely with the Genuine Parts process owners to align IT disaster recovery plans with business needs.
  • Work closely with IT subject matter experts to document applications and their supporting infrastructure and to develop appropriate recovery plans that can be used by IT support personnel in times of major outages and/or recovery tests.
  • Act as a project liaison to business projects and initiatives to assure IT disaster recovery is considered during projects
  • Build and improve disaster recovery processes through knowledge and incorporating best practices from internal and external sources.
  • Assume management responsibility for Data Center and Communications Network Recovery planning efforts with a major focus on achieving all financial estimates, assuring adequacy of end-state production recovery environments, meeting all strategic planning deliverables, coordinating activities of technology resources with other company business units and development groups, as required.
  • Lead in performing data center and communications network recovery capacity planning coordination with company technology groups in support of specific business unit current, in plan, and new initiatives, with a major focus on proactively assuring an adequate recovery network and processing environment, as well as, accurate, predictive budgeting.
  • Provide direct communications between the DR and BC Services Group, Information technology Operations, Technology architecture and Engineering Systems, and Systems Application Program Management. Participate in appropriate business unit and development planning meetings and activities. Facilitate timely identification, escalation, resolution, and follow-up for all outstanding issues.
  • Assist the department in enhancing, formalizing, and standardizing the business planning process, including forecasting and tracking mechanisms, across all business units, to facilitate timely accommodation of future company recovery requirements and opportunities.
  • Assume leadership role in developing, coordinating, and maintaining comprehensive data center recovery plans and a testing program, to ensure the ability to recovery, in the event of an unforeseen disruption to facilities, technology systems, or applications.
  • Perform all departmental administrative activities, including staff meeting attendance, monthly status reporting, budgeting, strategic planning, expense processing, documentation, and other activities, as assigned, in a timely fashion.
  • Produce all related documentation and provide training on Disaster Recovery procedures to employees as needed.
  • Perform periodic audits of existing Disaster Recovery Plans and report to management on any improvements that need to be made.

Business Continuity responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist business units with:
    • Assessment of potential business impact (Business Impact Analysis),
    • Definition of Critical, time-sensitive functions,
    • Design, development, and documentation of work area (business function) business continuity plans.
  • Recommend recovery strategies and options and assist with the implementation of recovery solutions.
  • Coordinate business continuity plan exercises.
  • Develop schedules for training / awareness for business partner associates.
  • Coordinate development of business unit schedules for annual business continuity documentation maintenance and update, exercises, and independent review and validation.
  • Report the business continuity status of business units to senior management.
  • Provide expertise and support to management and business functional areas, as requested, when a business disruption occurs.

Acquisition & Deployment

  • Evaluate and advise on selection of vendors to ensure service level agreements meet disaster recovery planning requirements.
  • Assure that all newly disaster recovery enabled applications, processes and services are fully tested prior to acceptance.

Operational Management

  • Ensure the company is prepared to recover key IT systems in the event of a disaster or communicate areas of risk where recoverability is unknown or uncertain.
  • Deal with planning, organizing, scheduling, follow-up, problem resolution and status reporting on global disaster recovery testing. Document and update pertinent results of application recoveries from planned recovery tests into system of record. Capture and maintain evidence of application recovery tests for reporting and audit purposes. Ensure that issues are documented and closed.
  • Oversee the execution of disaster recovery plan(s) when IT and/or major business operations disruptions occur. Train others to perform this role.
  • Coordinate with IT system owners to ensure consistency in process and to leverage technology for disaster recovery solutions wherever possible.
  • Handle the creation of program status communications to internal management and external stakeholders regarding the status of the IT disaster recovery program including annual reporting, audit report responses and customer requests.
  • Collect, trend and report key metrics for measuring disaster recovery and high availability program successes.
  • Maintain IT disaster recovery documentation consistent with policy and standards.
  • Develop schedules for training / awareness for business partner associates
  • Coordinate development of business unit schedules for annual business continuity documentation maintenance and update, exercises, and independent review and validation.
  • Report the business continuity status of business units to senior management.


Incidental Functions

  • Assist with projects as may be required to contribute to efficiency and effectiveness of the work.
  • Attend management meetings.
  • Assist in the design and purchase of necessary hardware/software for DR designs
  • Provide periodic 24/7 on-call support of specific functions.

Required Skills/Qualifications:

Knowledge & Experience

  • 5-7 years’ experience as an IT manager, including managing virtual teams
  • 5+ years of IT disaster recovery policies, procedures, regulations and governance processes.
  • IT Policy experience (creation and compliance).
  • 6+ years planning and coordinating disaster recovery efforts for a medium to large corporate enterprise.
  • 5+ years proven experience developing and/or supporting critical business applications,
  • Demonstrated understanding of application (ex; Java, .Net, HTML5) and infrastructure (servers, storage, network) technologies, and the techniques and methods available to recover in the event of a disaster.

Education Requirements:

Formal Education & Certification
• Bachelor’s degree master’s degree preferred in Management Experience 
• CBCP/MBCP certification (Disaster Recovery Institute) preferred.
