Ecologist/Environmental Planner

GEI Consultants Inc. is seeking a highly motivated ecologist or environmental planner to join the natural heritage team out of one of our branches in southern Ontario. The successful candidate will work on the environmental approvals process for a range of industries, including land development, linear infrastructure and resource extraction, among others. This position will involve management and production of project deliverables, coordinating and conducting fieldwork, liaising with clients and stakeholders, and project management duties including budget and timeline tracking.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
- Manage consulting projects including budget and timeline tracking
- Work collaboratively with clients, approval authorities, and other consulting firms to achieve project objectives.
- Collate information from various sources, including communications with stakeholders, design and implement field programs to assess natural heritage features, Species at Risk (SAR), and other environmental considerations
- Coordinate, lead and/or support aquatic and/or terrestrial field programs with a focus on reptiles, amphibians, mammals (bats), birds, vegetation taxonomy and community description, wetlands, fish community inventories and habitat assessments, and Species at Risk
- Work with other technical staff, and project managers to develop natural heritage assessments, inventories and impact assessments, as well as to prepare technical correspondence, Endangered Species Act permitting and registrations, and project reports
- Liaise with internal practices outside of natural heritage, such as stormwater and civil engineering, geostructural and geotechnical engineering, climate change and adaptation and restoration practices to provide innovative solutions to our clients’ challenges.
Minimum Qualifications
- Degree(s) in biology, ecology, environmental planning, ecological restoration, environmental science or related discipline
- 6+ years experience
- Experience managing projects and clients in the environmental consulting sector an asset
- Ability to interpret and critically assess information in terms of relevant legislation, policies and guidelines
- Strong written and verbal communication, organizational and time management skills
- Additional assets include field survey experience, familiarity with GIS and/or ecological restoration concepts and plans, Ecological Land Classification (ELC) training, Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES) training, arborist certification
- Valid Ontario driver’s license is required.
