GEI’s Chicago, Illinois office is seeking a Civil or Geotechnical Engineer with zero to two years of relevant experience beyond a college degree. This individual will provide support for office and field work under supervision of senior staff project managers.
 
During the first two years of employment, between 70% to 80% of the work is expected to be outside performing field work in all weather conditions. Field activities will include observing and logging of soil borings, collection of soil, rock and groundwater samples, performing earth resistivity test (ERT), performing pressuremeter testing and other relevant field activities. Occasional site visits during construction of foundation are expected. Training and supervision for these tasks will be provided by our senior staff.
 
Office tasks will include soil laboratory classification, preparing boring logs, review and interpretation of data and assisting in the preparation of reports and work plans; task and project planning and management; and preparation of proposals.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties 
  • Work on a variety of geotechnical engineering projects throughout the Region, but primarily in Illinois. 
  • Perform field tasks consisting of test boring layout, soil and rock logging, well installation observation, pressuremeter testing, earth resistivity testing, and other field engineering tasks.
  • Support geotechnical investigation for new construction, test borings, well installations, and technical oversight of subcontractors.
  • Assist project managers with managing and coordinating field investigation tasks, including work plan design, health and safety oversight, review of subcontractor procedures, schedule and coordination of related field tasks.
  • Conduct data management and analysis, prepare and review work plans and technical reports, and assist in preparation of presentations and proposals to clients and regulators.
  • Execute project success (scopes, schedules, budgets, deliverables, client satisfaction).
  • Interact with subcontractors, clients, and regulatory agency representatives.
  • Assist with proposals and business development activities.  
Minimum Qualifications 
  • This position is intended for civil or geotechnical engineers only.  Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering; Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering is a plus.
  • Passing EIT is a plus.
  • 0-2 years of relevant professional experience preferably in geotechnical consulting.
  • Excellent communication skills and technical report writing.
  • Construction site experience is a plus. 
  • Willingness to travel out-of-town on temporary assignments as needed.
  • Seller/Doer mindset.
  • Experience with software such as AutoCAD and GINT, is a plus.
  • Physical ability to perform field work including lifting 50–70-pound equipment in summer and winter conditions.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and car.
  • Punctuality is a must.
