Essential Responsibilities & Duties
- Serve as a member of the Woburn, MA geotechnical team and working under the supervision of a licensed engineer to provide field and office support on a wide range of challenging underground projects including buildings, dams, bridges, tunnels, slopes, ground improvement, and excavation support systems.
- Observe field explorations and geotechnical construction activities including deep and shallow foundation, support of excavation, horizontal directional drill, tieback and pile testing, and geotechnical instrumentation.
- Review, interpret, and evaluate monitoring data from geotechnical instruments including piezometers and inclinometers adjacent to deep excavations, seismographs, and ground monitoring points on floor wall, utility lines, SOE, and structures.
- Perform field hydrology tests and install groundwater monitoring sensors.
- Coordinate and interpret geotechnical laboratory tests including soil index parameter and shear strength.
- Develop spreadsheets and databases, conduct technical analysis, and assist with preparation of CAD files.
- Perform geotechnical analyses and calculations which includes review boring logs and soil descriptions, estimate soil strength properties, liquefaction triggering, short term/long term settlement, seismic site classification, and slope stability for static and seismic conditions.
- Establish geotechnical design parameters and perform slop stability analyses using SLIDE and GeoStudio at multiple cross sections along roadway.
- Prepare geotechnical memo to summarize subsurface exploration findings and provide recommendations of dewatering, earthwork, and support of excavation design.
- Assist project team to develop proposals for public, private, and educational institution clients.
- Assist with development of scope of project and budgets.
- As part of an integrated team, work closely and collaboratively with other project specialists, engineers, project managers, and project directors to execute projects effectively and efficiently.
- Engage internal and external business development conversations and local conferences with project teams, marketing teams, and clients on transportation and green energy opportunities.
- Establish and maintain academic relations with universities and other educational institutions. Assist project team to obtain additional information on subsurface conditions for the project from institution clients. Coordinate and organize project field work schedule on school campus to promote the awareness of the company among local STEM community and encourage students to apply for the entry-level positions and internships.
- Train new staff to develop both technical understandings and communication skills for field work, including engaging difficult conversation with earth contractors and drilling subcontractors.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field with coursework in geotechnical and structural engineering.
Experience:
Must have 2 years of civil engineering experience focused on geotechnical engineering, including working with geotechnical engineering software including Slide and GeoStudio, Arc map.
Travel:
Must be willing to travel regionally and nationally to projects site up to 40% of time to project sites – locations to be determined.
