The Role


In this role you would be the strategy lead for GDS reporting into the Deputy Director, Strategy and Economic team. This will give you a unique insight into the workings of GDS and our cross-government priorities and exposure at senior levels to stakeholders across Government and externally.


This is a high profile area of work. We are looking for a creative individual who can think on their feet, solve problems and build collaborative relationships across the organisation and across Whitehall.


You will lead the strategy team, overseeing implementation of the Government Transformation Strategy, developing GDS’s strategic vision and approach and managing senior stakeholder relationships to deliver its objectives.


This will involve solving complex or/and complicated problems, working with colleagues from other government departments, and challenging others to be ambitious in the use of the tools, techniques and technologies of the internet age in the internal functioning of government and, most importantly, to deliver excellent services that meet the needs of their users.


Main responsibilities


  • oversee implementation, monitoring and reporting of the Government Transformation Strategy and work across Government to manage GDS’s input into the UK Digital Strategy and future policy initiatives.
  • develop and communicate the vision and strategy for Government Transformation through senior engagement, briefings and the media/ministerial submissions, including managing quarterly reporting on progress of Government Transformation to Civil Service Board.
  • lead and manage strong relationships with stakeholders from all levels across government and with external influencers to secure delivery of strategic priorities.
  • provide targeted advice and support to secure delivery of key programmes and priorities within GDS e.g. GOV.UK Verify and GAAP
  • be part of the Strategy and Policy leadership team and deputise for the DD and Directors as needed.
  • lead, mentor and support the other members of the S&P team and wider strategy community in GDS


Skills and experience

It’s essential that you have experience in:


  • strategic leadership and delivery across an organisation
  • experiencing of leading and influencing teams, capable of operating at pace with a high performing agile teams;
  • communication and influencing, with an ability to build effective relationships at the most senior levels and operate successfully in a political or complex environment;
  • establishing and maintaining excellent stakeholder relationships, and credibly engage with, influence and gain the confidence of senior leaders and external influencers
  • understanding of the tools, technologies and techniques of the internet age, as well as their current or potential socioeconomic impacts.
  • communicating to non-technical audiences and producing briefings and presentations
  • working in a strategy or central function to deliver change across organisations
  • identifying areas for improvement and delivering change in a fast paced organisation


It’s desirable that you have:


  • ability to produce accurate work to tight deadlines under pressure
  • experience in a similar role or a demonstration of transferable skills
  • experience in a Digital, Technology or Data focussed role
