Principal Data Engineer
We are looking for a Principal Data Engineer to ensure we are making and adhering to the correct technical decisions for the future of Funding Circle. The role of Principal Data Engineer has a core responsibility to ensure that all technical decision making is made pragmatically and effectively, whilst being effectively communicated with delivery teams and wider stakeholders (such as Tech Leadership, Tech Strategy, Principal Architects). They evangelise best practices for their craft inside their respective teams, but also with the wider business. 
Reporting to the VP of Data , the role holds responsibility for all Data Engineering and Data Platform needs by overseeing technical architecture, identifying the capabilities of our product, understanding what our technical platforms require, and ensuring the correct solutions are built based on our commercial, product and technical strategies. 
These decisions will pragmatically balance any product requirements with global consistency, system complexity, engineer skill sets, opportunity costs and financial costs.
Please note, the minimum expectation for office attendance is two to three days per week in our central London office.

The role 
  • Encouraging and mentoring team members in partnership with other disciplines to create value with data across the wider organisation
  • Responsible for technical quality of the data lake and data infrastructure
  • Ensuring systems follow the agreed principles and architecture defined at Funding Circle
  • Lead initiatives to enhance data quality, data culture and governance across the organisation, ensuring compliance with FC guidelines and industry best practices 
  • Responsible for communicating technical decisions and strategy to the teams of engineers they cover and to the broader organisation
  • Responsible for bringing feedback on the current system state and the impact of technical decision and strategy from engineering teams to the Tech Strategy and Tech Leadership teams
  • Work closely with Engineering Managers to ensure all planned works takes into account the product and technical capability needs as well as the feature delivery
  • Work closely with engineering teams to ensure they are supported in the right balance of feature delivery and technical capability needs - and know what good looks like for the FC platform and how to create value for our customers
  • Proactively problem solving, identifying and confidently mitigating any risks, issues or control weaknesses that arise in your day-to-day
What we’re looking for 
  • Preferably 5+ years experience in a data engineering role, preferably in digital products
  • Experience in building data strategies that drive data monetisation 
  • Extensive experience in building ETL pipelines, ingesting data from a diverse set of data sources (including event streams, various forms of batch processing)
  • Ability to listen to the ideas of others and strategically build on them.  Whilst there is no line management responsibility the role is part of the senior data leadership team and the ability to influence and support others in helping them to succeed is highly desirable
  • Ability to clearly communicate to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to collaborate effectively, working alongside other team members towards the team’s goals, and enabling others to succeed
  • Demonstrable experience of working alongside cross-functional teams interacting with Product Managers, Infrastructure Engineers, Data Scientists, and Data Analysts
  • Extensive use of cloud technologies such as AWS
