Frontier Communications is seeking a Senior Video Network Architect.  The Senior Video Network Architect is responsible for research, tracking industry technology developments, equipment and vendor recommendations, evaluation, test and selection of communications hardware and software elements over a broad range of video technologies and applications such as Linear video and VOD Systems, RF and IP based set top boxes, dynamic, linear and addressable ad insertion, subscriber facing client development, content distribution and management within Frontier’s overall network architecture.

This individual will be required to help assemble the capital budget, create projects for video technology implementations and perform lab evaluations. The position reports directly to the Sr Manager of Video Operations.  The position also plays an important role in evaluating new business opportunities by identifying the technologies, costs and timeframes needed to create new revenue opportunities.

This position develops and defines detailed system specifications and service requirements in support of new product rollouts including vendor selection, engineering analysis, product testing, functional system integration testing. The person in this position plays a key role within the organization by coordinating with the product team, network and video engineering teams as well as operational teams to integrate new products, services and network upgrades into the production networks. 

Specific duties/responsibilities/functions: 

Technology planning and evaluation as it pertains to system design requirements including new equipment selection, integration, requirement specifications, requirement gathering, design selection, alternative recommendations, costing and scheduling.

Ability to work in a lab environment to define test plans and execute tests to meet customer requirements.  Develop guidelines and specifications for the proper configuration and usage of application equipment and it’s components within the network. Provide financial analysis on proposed products and justify the cost benefit of the new technology’s impact on Frontier’s network.

Propose and implement system enhancements (software and hardware updates) that will improve the performance and reliability of the systems infrastructure. Involved in hardware procurement, system planning, upgrading, monitoring, testing, troubleshooting and servicing using skills as an experienced professional with a full understanding of industry practices and procedures.

This position requires public speaking, presentation, and training skills with suitable proficiency in English to be clearly understood while presenting detailed technical material to an audience of peers, management, partners, vendors, and/or customers. 

This position requires occasional operation of a company fleet vehicle. The candidate must have and maintain a valid state driver’s license.

This position requires the candidate to physically install and cable common network and server equipment in typical telecommunications and data center racks. The person must be able to bend, stand, kneel, stoop, and reach (including overhead) while operating simple tools. The person must be able to lift, push, and carry materials up to 75lbs. 


Required Experience:

Eight or more years of video engineering or video network architecture experience performing hands-on network design, configuration, and troubleshooting of large production video networks.  3+ years’ experience with video caching, CDN, and video or web acceleration technologies. Tier 1 or Tier 2 Telco/Cable experience highly desired. 

  • Strong experience and knowledge of audio and video compression protocols (MPEG2, AVC, HEVC, AC3, AAC, MP1L2).
  • Strong experience and knowledge of MPEG Transport Stream standards and analysis including TR101-290 specifications.
  • Strong experience with content acquisition technologies from C/Ku band satellite reception, L-band transport technologies over fiber, IRDs and modulation schemes.
  • Strong experience with terrestrial delivery technologies such as Zixi, SRT, RIST, etc.
  • Strong experience with live and file based video compression equipment such as Elemental, Mystic, Cisco/Synamedia encoder/transcoders
  • Strong experience working with and troubleshooting multicast video transport networks.
  • Strong experience with adaptive bitrate video packaging protocols (HLS, Smooth Streaming, DASH, etc.)
  • Strong experience with Video on Demand platforms including back offices, session setup, streaming, and ad decisioning
  • Strong experience with local ad insertion technologies such as SeaChange SPOT+ and STB addressable advertising technologies including Invidi Advatar
  • Strong experience with FiOS, IPTV (Mediaroom) and OTT/TV Everywhere middleware systems
  • Must have a working knowledge of symmetric and asymmetric encryption commonly used in PKI.
  • Strong experience authoring network specifications and diagrams (MS Word/Visio or equivalent)
  • Strong experience with Web technologies and protocols (HTTP, HTTPs, SSL, HTML, XML, etc.)
  • Strong experience with internet caching technologies and/or CDNs (Edgeware, Broadpeak, Edgecast , etc.)
  • Experience configuring and maintaining content delivery systems such as caches, streamers, origin servers, request routing systems, load balancers, log aggregation systems, etc.
  • Experience with Windows and Linux system administration and related tools
  • Experience programming and/or a working knowledge of scripting languages used in Linux and Windows systems.
  • Experience configuring common Internet services and applications (Web, DNS, SFTP, etc.)
  • Experience with packet/protocol fault analysis for common IP and Ethernet protocols using network traces or sniffer captures (i.e. analyzing Wireshark captures)
  • Experience in the Cable TV Head Ends and Telecommunications Delivery networks (DSL and PON technologies)
  • Experience with Ad Insertion technologies (linear and streaming)
  • Experience managing engineers and technical aspects of video upgrades and projects

 Special Skills 

  • Proficient in network design and engineering  
  • Strong technical, analytical, and organizational skills associated with the design and implementation of video delivery on IP based networks in service provider environments
  • Ability to work in a lab environment, perform hands-on configuration of network equipment, define test plans, and execute tests to meet requirements.
  • Strong Microsoft Visio, Word, Excel, PowerPoint skills or equivalent
  • Detailed understanding of Internet and routing protocols (TCP/IP, BGP4, OSPF, Ethernet, MPLS, etc.)
  • Familiarity with broadband access networks, service provider devices such as IP/ATM DSLAMs, Broadband Network Gateways (BNG), Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) home routers/gateways, and related technologies (PPPoE/A, DHCP, RADIUS, etc.)
  • Technical familiarity of MPLS and related services, such as L2VPNs, L3VPNs, and VPLS
  • Presentation and training skills including the ability to clearly present technical material 

Education, certification and/or license requirements: 

BSEE, BSCS, BSET, BSIT or 8 or more years equivalent experience in a technical/engineering field 

Any of the following technical certifications are strongly desired but not required:

  • AWS Cloud certifications
  • Microsoft Azure certifications
  • Cisco/Juniper certified networking certifications
  • Red Hat Certified Network Engineer (RHCE) or equivalent certification from an alternate vendor.
