FloSports is looking for a Chief Content Officer, CCO, to design, optimize and lead a world-class content creation team that will help FloSports’ properties become the essential daily destination for each sport FloSports operates within. The ideal candidate will be a forward-thinking, results-oriented business leader with proven success creating and leading profitable and scalable creative functions in an innovative media environment. The success of this role will be measured on the development and execution of a content strategy that will multiply traffic and engagement across all platforms and our entire portfolio of sport verticals, articulate the tradeoff and opportunity cost of investments, optimize resources and ultimately drive active subscriber growth. Our CCO will be part of our executive team, reporting to our CEO, and  will be based in our Austin, Texas office.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Optimize revenue-generating sport vertical content teams that create daily digital content to feed FloSports’ vertical sites, newsletters and social platforms
  • Deliver ambitious results, in-depth analysis and actionable recommendations that maximize traffic and engagement across our entire portfolio of sport verticals
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the marketing team, helping to execute subscriber acquisition and retention strategies and elevate our brand and brand awareness 
  • Develop editorial policies and processes that maximize traffic surrounding the live ‘event arch’ while counterbalancing the midweek non-event-based content that wow our customers
  • Manage deadlines, populate and regulate the content calendar for each vertical
  • Be at the front of designing and building a world-class content team of the future to help the company scale and grow into a multi-billion dollar organization
  • Leverage original and event content to create new opportunities for audiences to be exposed, engage and visit Flo and drive new monetization 
  • Create sponsorable assets and products to drive new revenue opportunities. Eg sponsored team or player rankings. 
  • Ensure a consistent tone, voice, and style across all content, and verify that brand voice and portrayal are consistent no matter the channel
  • Develop standards, systems and best practices for optimizing content creation, distribution, maintenance, and content repurposing
  • Deepen insights into Flo’s audience and subscriber segments; establish content-first customer profiles
  • Expand social content and grow followers and audience engagement across all social handles and platforms
  • Collaborate with product to create content rich websites and optimized audience experiences and SEO, resulting in increased site traffic and engagement
  • Discover and integrate innovative technologies and tools  that build efficiencies and optimize revenue opportunities for the content department, to include CMS, analytics and audience and engagement tools
  • Conduct periodic competitive audits
  • Provide insights and support around Privacy laws and compliance
  • Provide leadership and guidance to build a nimble, efficient, leading-edge content team with expertise in all critical disciplines. Optimize performance, innovation, career development and employee retention.
  • Nurture an inclusive environment by seeking feedback and suggestions from across the organization 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Seasoned leader with 12+ years of relevant experience scaling content and editorial teams within the media industry
  • Proven track record deploying strategies that optimize audience reach, loyalty, traffic and engagement
  • Significant experience within a direct-to-consumer and/or subscription business 
  • Ability to lead complex change management and communications 
  • Strong ability to inspire and coach creatives, use data to inform and not stifle creativity, and a history of hiring, managing, leading, and mentoring high-performing teams
  • Proven ability to utilize qualitative and quantitative data to develop actionable insights
  • Possess senior-level communication skills including synthesizing insights, calibrating to the correct audience, leading a room and steering a difficult conversation
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, who can successfully articulate high-level strategy, as well as tactical details
  • Experience in media, especially video streaming, sports  and OTT is a huge plus
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing or related communications field is preferred
