Excel Academy was founded in 2003 with the mission to provide a high-quality education to students in East Boston and Chelsea Massachusetts, communities that are predominantly low-income and Latinx and historically have faced significant social and educational barriers. Our success in Massachusetts is proof that the opportunity gap can be closed and we opened a new school in Rhode Island in 2022.  At Excel Academy Charter Schools, we believe that when a student has the support and tools to pursue a productive post-secondary pathway aligned to their personal identity and values, it can fundamentally change their life trajectory.

About the Role
The School Psychologist will provide consultation, assessment, and intervention services related to school psychology as a consultant. They will support Excel Rhode Island and will report to the Network Director of Student Supports. School psychologists at Excel receive 2 hours of monthly supervision, plus ad hoc support, from an experienced licensed educational psychologist who is a nationally certified school psychologist as well.

Projected time commitment: Conducting 1-5 evaluations during the course of the school year and participating in relevant meetings.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

• Evaluate and screen students’ abilities and needs to determine eligibility for special education services;
  • Administer, score, and interpret assessments in the areas of cognitive, emotional, social, and behavioral functioning;

• If you can provide your own assessments, that is strongly preferred but not required;

• Reach out to families to collect detailed family input and relevant history information;
• Collaborate with students’ teachers to gain a clear and complete in-school profile;
• Write evaluation reports including all cognitive, social-emotional, and behavior assessments, goals, and specific recommendations in a timely fashion and in accordance with compliance due dates and the Rhode Island disability categories;
• Act as part of the diagnostic team for initial and three-year evaluations in tandem with special education teachers, general education teachers, family, and outside providers;
• Maintain the legal confidentiality and privacy of student information while collaborating with students’ special education teams;

Qualifications

• A master’s degree in School Psychology is required;
• Possession of RI School Psychologist License;
• A commitment to working with underserved, urban youth;

• Have experience in a public or charter school setting
• Speak Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic
• Can speak to the importance of rigorous classroom instruction and culture
