Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled Compliance Engineer to lead product safety, certification, and regulatory compliance activities for our Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) portfolio. This role requires deep knowledge of UL 2202, UL 22311/2, Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) processes, and all relevant safety and legal requirements governing EV chargers in North America. The Compliance Engineer will partner closely with design engineering, quality, program management, and external test labs to ensure compliant, certifiable, and safe products.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the internal expert and final authority on UL 2202 and UL 22311/2 requirements, providing strategic guidance on how standards should shape product architecture and design philosophy across the EVSE portfolio.
- Establish and own compliance frameworks for design documentation review, including schematics, BOMs, and firmware — ensuring requirements are embedded early in the development lifecycle rather than addressed reactively.
- Lead EVgo's engagement with standards bodies and NRTLs (UL, ETL, TUV, CSA, etc.), influencing the interpretation and evolution of regulatory requirements as they apply to EVSE.
- Proactively monitor and assess pending updates to UL, NEC, FCC, and SAE J-standards, translating regulatory trends into strategic product and engineering roadmap decisions.
- Define and lead EVgo's participation in UL 3141 for energy management, representing the company's interests in shaping emerging standards.
Certification Strategy & Management
- Own the end-to-end certification strategy across the EVSE portfolio, establishing scalable processes for NRTL engagement from initial submittal through final listing.
- Direct the development of test plans, evidence packages, construction review documents, and risk assessments — setting the standard for how these are prepared across the organization.
- Lead resolution of complex nonconformances during testing (electrical, mechanical, environmental, EMC), applying independent judgment to determine corrective paths with broad functional impact.
- Ensure all products meet legally required certifications before market release, and establish governance mechanisms to maintain ongoing compliance as products evolve.
- Shape EVgo's approach to material compliance and wireless device certification, building scalable frameworks rather than case-by-case solutions.
Cross-Functional Technical Leadership
- Serve as a strategic compliance partner to engineering, product, and program management teams throughout the full product lifecycle — influencing design decisions at the earliest stages.
- Lead root cause analysis for complex certification failures, driving systemic corrective actions that prevent recurrence across the portfolio.
- Define and lead compliance-focused design reviews, safety reviews, and DFMEA/PFMEA participation — elevating the organization's overall approach to safety engineering.
- Develop and deliver compliance training programs for engineering and product teams, building organizational capability and reducing reliance on external expertise.
Documentation & Quality
- Establish and govern controlled documentation standards for safety listings, deviations, CDFs, and engineering change orders across the compliance function.
- Partner with quality and manufacturing leadership to institutionalize ongoing production compliance practices.
- Lead audit readiness and serve as the primary point of contact for NRTL and regulatory body audits.
Qualifications:
- Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 8 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 5 years of experience; or equivalent experience. Entry at this level may require committee review.
Desired Skills:
- Deep, hands-on expertise with UL 2202, UL 22311/2, and EVSE or power electronics standards — recognized internally and externally as a subject matter authority.
- Comprehensive understanding of NRTL processes, including listing, follow-up services, and factory inspections, with the ability to strategically navigate and influence those relationships.
- Proven ability to develop and own technical documentation frameworks for certification across complex product portfolios.
- Expert-level ability to interpret and apply electrical safety requirements — isolation, creepage/clearance, temperature rise, and fault conditions — across diverse product architectures.
- Extensive experience with NEC Article 625, SAE J1772, J3068, and other EVSE standards, including active participation in standards development or working groups.
- Strong knowledge of EMC/EMI regulations (FCC Part 15, CISPR) and their application to high-power charging systems.
- Broad background in high-power electronics, inverters, or DC fast charging equipment at a systems level.
- Familiarity with global standards such as IEC 61851, IEC 62196 series, SAE J1772, and SAE J3400, with the ability to assess international compliance implications.
- Prior experience in an NRTL lab or testing/certification environment, ideally in a senior technical or leadership capacity.
For job positions in CA, CO, and NYC, the estimated salary range for a new hire in this position is $126,700.00 USD to $158,400.00 USD. Actual salary may vary depending on job-related factors, including knowledge, skills, experience, and location. In addition to a competitive base salary, discretionary target cash bonus, and restricted stock units (subject to Board Approval).
