As a Senior Manager, Energy Portfolio Management you are responsible for overseeing the development and execution of energy trading strategies, managing financial transactions, and ensuring compliance with risk management guidelines for EPCOR’s Energy Management function. This position also involves trading energy, including transaction structuring and negotiations.
As this is a new role at EPCOR, the successful candidate will be responsible for establishing the Energy Portfolio Management function and building a high-performing team. Reporting to the Vice President of EPCOR Energy Management, you will lead a team of professionals to optimize the purchase and sale of energy utilities (electricity and natural gas) directly to/from end users and intermediaries under negotiated rates and terms. Additionally, this position will make strategic decisions and lead a team in developing trading strategies to optimize trading outcomes of energy commodities. In this position, you will also foster relationships with key stakeholders, including EPCOR leadership, customers, suppliers, and regulatory bodies.
This position is eligible to participate in EPCOR’s Where We Work hybrid program depending on business needs and upon meeting the eligibility requirements.
What you’d be responsible for
Strategy, Innovation & Function Set-up:
- Leading the development and implementation of long-term energy trading and hedging strategies including electricity and natural gas transactions for the Energy function and team.
- Driving strategic innovation by identifying new market opportunities, promoting new and refining existing products and service offerings to enhance EPCOR’s market presence and positioning in the Energy Wholesale market.
- Establish the Energy Portfolio Management function from the ground up including defining its mission critical goals, processes, teams’ skill set required to drive high performance and achieve results
- Providing advice to the Senior Leadership Team and Executives that shape the strategic decisions and positioning for EPCOR’s Energy business outlook, considering risks, stakeholders, and the regulatory environment.
Portfolio Optimization & Market Analysis:
- Ensuring the efficient use and management of energy assets, including electricity, gas, and renewable energy sources to enhance EPCOR’s trading performance.
- Executing utilities financial transactions such as swaps and options in alignment with the company's hedging and optimization programs.
- Aligning budget decisions with broader organizational goals and market trends; managing day-to-day budget oversight and approving operational expenditures consistent with corporate policies.
- Analyzing energy market conditions, trends and dynamics to develop deep insights and drive decision making for shaping, and refining EPCOR’s trading strategies, while maintaining competitive information regarding loads, resources, and prices.
Risk Management & Regulatory Compliance:
- Managing EPCOR’s overall risk profile and ensuring adherence to EPCOR’s risk management guidelines
- Ensuring compliance with energy regulatory, legislative and financial guidelines and accounting principles as well as staying updated with market rules, policies and protocols.
Stakeholder Reporting & Engagement:
- Building, and managing strong relationships with EPCOR peers and external stakeholders (e.g. regulators, government officials, customers, partners, project creditors, community members) and other market participants to gain deep understanding of the market regulations and ultimately influence business outcomes and resolve risk-based issues.
- Liaising with Utility partners to ensure EPCOR Natural Gas Limited Partnership (ENGLP) contract for the optimum contract rate.
- Collaborate seamlessly with cross functional teams in EPCOR such as Energy Analytics, Risk Management, and Finance and ensure a collective and cohesive trading strategies that represents EPCOR’s interests.
- Preparing presentations and communicating detailed reports to senior management indicating findings, performance metrics, and strategic recommendations.
- Analyzing energy data, preparing reports and providing required information for any necessary Ontario Energy Board (OEB) and Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) filings.
Team Building & Leadership:
- Leading a highly functioning team; fostering a culture of ownership and innovation through effective hiring, talent development, organizational structure, and considering appropriate succession planning.
- Creating positive momentum to drive high team engagement through effective collaboration, team bonding activities, coaching, mentorship.
What’s required to be successful
- Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years directly related experience in energy trading, with a focus on electricity and natural gas markets and a deep understanding of energy market regulations, coupled with 5 years of progressive leadership experience.
- Proficiency in analytical tools (e.g. Excel, Power BI, Python, SQL, etc.) and a deep understanding of energy market regulations.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with senior leaders and regulatory bodies and to communicate complex concepts and strategies in explainable ways based on the targeted audience.
- A proven track record and demonstrable experience building and leading teams as well as coaching and managing team’s performance to achieve pre-defined business goals.
- Strong business and financial acumen with demonstrated ability to develop governance practices to effectively manage risk, deliver results and optimize utilities financial transactions and overall trading outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in cross functional teams to achieve complicated goals and objectives.
- Possess high attention to detail while managing multiple priorities and large volumes of data and information in a dynamic environment.
