We are hiring a full-time permanent Fleet Engineer position working out of Edmonton, AB.

EPCOR manages a complex and diverse fleet of over 1100 units. The fleet includes construction equipment, passenger vehicles, multiple categories of medium and heavy duty truck based equipment (e.g. bucket trucks, sewer-flushers, cranes, tandem dump trucks, mobile work centers, etc.), and trailers.

 

As Fleet Engineer you are accountable for developing detailed specifications for EPCOR’s fleet vehicles. This includes developing and executing the specification development program, coordinating working groups with various stakeholders to determine operational requirements, ensuring specifications meet all legal and regulatory requirements, and assessing impacts to cost, reliability and availability. You will supplement stakeholder input with your own research and analysis to draft the specifications. You will represent EPCOR Fleet Services as a subject matter expert to ensure specifications are accurate in any tenders and will analyze bid proposals as well as assist in inspecting completed units as required to ensure vendors supply fleet vehicles in adherence to EPCOR’s specifications.

 

You will work closely with the Specialist, Fleet Procurement to ensure Fleet Services executes EPCOR’s fleet capital program. This role is primarily accountable for specification development but will support procurement and other fleet functions as necessary.

 

What you’d be responsible for

 

Specification Development

  • Ensuring all units comply with the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations, Alberta Traffic Safety Act, Regulations of the Occupational Health, Safety Statutes, and any other regulations related to vehicles or equipment.
  • Completing user need assessments to determine the content of vehicle/ equipment drawings and specifications.
  • Advising customers of all matters related to purchases (weight distribution, safety-related issues, design compromises, etc.).
  • Translating needs into detailed written specifications of equipment to be purchased, including specialized fleet vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Determining the design, modifications, and custom fabrications suitable for the intended services, meeting sound engineering practices, and complying with all applicable standards and legislation.
  • Providing engineering certification for modifications and designs when necessary.
  • Building and maintaining a standard specification library, ensuring specifications are updated with any modifications.
  • Working with vendors as needed to ensure engineering analyses and CAD drawings are completed as necessary.
  • Ensuring all custom designs and certification procedures are recorded and that the necessary documents are presented in a professional manner suitable for tender.
  • Providing engineering analysis and certification for modifications and designs when necessary.

 

Analysis and Research

  • Researching industry standard practices, new technologies, and other alternatives to provide input into specification development working groups.
  • Analyzing EPCOR's data and other data sources to determine the impact of specification decisions on operating costs, downtime, availability, and work practices.
  • Preparing technical studies, database queries/reports, and recommending implementation strategies.
  • Providing technical advice on matters related to vehicles and equipment.
  • Assisting in the development and preparation of fleet capital budget plans.
  • Investigating and conducting failure analysis on vehicles, equipment, and components to determine the cause of failure and developing suitable corrective action plans.

 

Consulting

  • Coordinating groups of subject matter experts to get input and approval on specifications.
  • Ensuring all input and decision-making is fully documented.
  • Addressing customers concerns on vehicle and equipment suitability, performance, and safety.

 

What’s required to be successful

 

  • Degree in Engineering or a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology from a recognized post-secondary institute.
    • With a degree in Engineering we require:
      • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.),
    • With a diploma in Civil or Electrical Engineering we require:
      • Professional Licensee (Eng.) with the ability to review, approve and stamp mechanical designs
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience working as a mechanical engineer or equivalent.
  • 2 years of directly related experience in developing and documenting complex fleet specifications.
    • Candidates with lesser experience, including non-fleet related, may be considered for this role on a developmental basis.
  • Strong knowledge of automotive systems, electrical systems and hydraulic systems.
  • Strong understanding of Fleet governance and regulations (Federal and Provincial) requirements.
  • Strong understanding of bid, request for proposals and other procurement processes.
  • Ability to apply relevant fleet knowledge and experience in accordance with established Fleet practices and technical requirements.
  • Ability to draft technical specifications.
  • Ability to use fleet management information systems.
  • Ability to organize specifications into an easily accessible and referenced system.
  • Ability to keep up-to-date with new technology available to the Fleet industry and apply applicable opportunities to existing processes.
  • Ability to coordinate teams of subject matter experts and gather their input.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Excel at an intermediate level.
  • Background in specialized truck mounted equipment would be an asset.
  • Experience in the operation of a large and diverse fleet would be an asset.
