We are hiring a Senior Manager of Gas Supply and Operations (Ops) Engineering working out of Toronto.

 

The Senior Manager of Gas Supply and Ops Engineering leads the team responsible for supporting Ontario site operations and securing necessary gas supplies for our regulated utility operations. This includes providing engineering support for system modeling, integrity, GIS, capital program management, and developing operating processes and procedures.

 

Additionally, this role involves negotiating and managing contracts, setting strategic objectives for gas supply, and ensuring the team is equipped to handle operational challenges. The Senior Manager must align team capabilities with Ontario Operations’ strategies and long-term plans, using a mix of internal and external resources to mitigate business risks.

What you’d be responsible for

 

Planning

  • Developing and implementing energy procurement strategies in accordance with internal policies and aligning with Ontario Energy Board guidance.
  • Executing supply side energy procurement activities, rates analysis, and utility budget planning.
  • Leading and completing procurement strategies, plans, and studies for the procurement of gas supply, pipeline capacity, and storage capacity including market, weather, and demand studies.
  • Providing input and recommendations into business units strategic decisions while being responsible for implementing the business plan for Gas Supply and Operations Engineering.
  • Strategically planning and identifying the budget requirements for the provision of Engineers, technology upgrades, and system improvements for improved safety, reliability, and security of gas supply
  • Developing a Capital Management program overseeing the life cycle of a project including initial justification, planning, execution, forecasting, and project close out.

 

Operational Excellence

  • Managing and administrating all issues related to utility contracts and third party service to ensure uninterrupted service.
  • Ensuring the technical integrity, maintenance and optimized performance of the Ontario operational systems including natural gas and electricity systems.
  • Accountable for engineering studies, analysis of results, and recommendations in support of operational activities and recommendations for system improvements.
  • Establishing inputs for Capital Planning and Asset Management concerning aging assets and system condition and area growth that are proving to limit efficient system operations.
  • Accountable for the GIS strategy and support to Ontario’s Operations.

 

Execution

  • Responsible for Company Green House Gas Reporting, analyzing energy date, preparing reports, and providing required information for any necessary OEB filings.
  • Leading the negotiation, procurement, and administration of gas supply pipeline and storage capacity agreements.
  • Accountable for identification, development, review and revision of Operations procedures and processes to ensure reliable and safe operations and compliance to policies, standards, regulatory, pipeline & utility requirements.

 

Relationships

  • Responsible for working with utility partners to ensure ENGLP contract for the optimum contract rate.
  • Establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with internal and external contacts across different business units.
  • Ensuring cross functional accountability and authority practices. Analyzing and identifying issues impacting operational performance and establish initiatives for continuous improvement to ensure productivity, quality, reliability, and safety functions for Operations.

 

Leadership

  • Hiring, engaging and developing talent
  • Creating and developing capable, committed, and high-performing team(s).
  • Setting appropriate performance objectives, provide coaching and support, and hold people accountable for achieving results.
  • Evaluating capabilities/potential and prioritize development activities to close gaps and build succession pipeline(s).

 

What’s required to be successful

 

  • Professional Engineer registered with Ontario Professional Engineers Association.
  • Ten plus (10+) years of progressively responsible experience in utility operations including an additional five plus (5+) years of progressive supervisory experience.
  • Masters Degree and CEM highly desirable.
  • Recruited, motivated, provided direction, coached, delegated and managed performance. Ability to create a safe, inclusive, engaging organizational climate.
  • Experience managing projects and initiatives in a regulated business.
  • Progressively responsible working knowledge with Gas modelling and GIS systems.
  • Experience with and ability to create, maintain, and update gas system models and perform analysis, including advanced applications such as state estimation and contingency analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of networking or SCADA system.
  • Sound knowledge of natural gas and electric distribution power systems, methods, and engineering.
  • Expert knowledge of natural gas energy procurement practices, energy markets, gas storage and gas control (preferably Ontario)
