We are hiring a full-time, temporary (for up to 7 months) Engineer-in-Training, Design Services position working out of Edmonton, AB.

The Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is accountable for the design, analysis, development, implementation, administration, and production of Aerial and Underground power distribution designs. In addition, the EIT will be involved in low and medium voltage designs for inter-affiliate clients including dark fiber. EIT will ensure designs meet EPCOR Standards and Specifications, Alberta Electric Code requirement and CSA Standards, and achieve the required outcomes with time spans of up to 3-12 months.

 

What you’d be responsible for

 

  • Preparing engineering designs, standards and specifications for low to medium voltage electrical assets.
  • Completing distribution design; ordering material, work order issuance, and approval, as well as field inspection and contractor management during construction and maintenance activities.
  • Collecting and analyzing technical and other necessary information to propose solutions to project related issues throughout the project lifespan.
  • Identifying the necessary budget requirements for the provision of engineering resources, process improvements, technology upgrades, and design improvements related to improved safety and reliability.
  • Recommending new approaches to designs, recognizing and encouraging continuous improvement throughout the design team.
  • Interpreting engineering drawings, and maintaining both graphic and non-graphic information.
  • Obtaining all required permitting and approvals necessary for construction including easement, Ministerial Consent, Railway Crossing, ULA, pipeline crossing/proximity agreements, etc.
  • Liaising with customers, the Design team and project management group for regular communication and feedback on work progress.
  • Communicating courteously and effectively with customers or consultants by telephone, email, letters, and in person.
  • Managing the workload, maintaining records, meeting all of the indicated deadlines, and maintaining specified metrics.
  • Providing input to the Manager, Distribution Design plans and directions.
  • Demonstrating high performance, high discipline, safe work practice, ownership and accountability.

 

What’s required to be successful

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Civil or Electrical) and eligibility to register with APEGA as EIT.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Products (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of AEUC, CSA 22.3 No. 1 and CSA 22.3 No. 7 Codes and various other codes and specifications.
  • Ability to quickly learn specialized software tools such as IVARA, MicroStation, SPIDA Calc, SPIDA Silk, PULL-Planner, etc.
  • Ability to write concisely and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated skill in analysis and problem solving using scientific methods.
  • Demonstrated skill in presentations, drawings and diagrams, and report writing.
  • Commitment to teamwork, is a self-starter, and a leader.
