We are hiring a full-time, permanent Senior Engineer, Linear Assets position working out of Edmonton, AB.

The Senior Engineer, Linear Assets is accountable for the specification, maintenance, repair, testing, and overall life cycle planning of electric Transmission linear assets connecting EDTI substations. This role manages both aerial and underground lines, including the highly specialized high-pressure fluid filled (HPFF) pipe-type cables. They will also be responsible for authenticating, reviewing, and creating engineering designs, standards and specifications; and repairing and maintaining Transmission’s linear assets. This includes ensuring all financial, engineering, construction, maintenance, inspection and repair activities are planned. This position will also ensure all health & safety requirements are identified, addressed, implemented, and followed. The Senior Engineer, Linear Assets is EDTI’s expert representative for identifying, witnessing and approving critical hold points and Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) at supplier factories around the world.

 

What you’d be responsible for

 

  • Providing input to long term plans and directions and ensuring appropriate understanding of the strategy throughout Transmission.
  • Authenticating engineering designs, standards and specifications, including implementing broader modifications and new approaches to designs, maintenance, repairs, procedures, processes, specifications, and standards.
  • Analyzing and identifying issues impacting operational performance, and establishing initiatives for continuous improvement.
  • Mentoring and coaching engineers and designers, and identifying training opportunities for employees.
  • Optimizing maintenance, repair and inspection plans, and supporting the field crews as maintenance and repair activities are underway.
  • Developing, implementing and reviewing engineering and asset management processes to ensure compliance to policies, standards, regulatory requirements, and mitigation of risks.
  • Supporting technical and technological decisions related to manufacturing and specification of linear assets and their components.
  • Identifying and implementing life cycle replacement strategies for linear transmission equipment, including aerial lines, underground conductors, duct lines, and pump plants.
  • Submitting tariff applications such as narratives, business cases, and post implementation review documentation for the Alberta Utilities Commission as well as the creation of the maintenance and OpEx outlook.
  • Demonstrating compliance where Alberta Electric System Operator standards apply and aligning maintenance, operations, and life cycle planning to industry best practices.
  • Establishing and managing more senior collaborative relationships with internal contacts across departments and identifying, establishing, and managing collaborative relationships with operational and senior level external contacts.
  • Evaluating, monitoring, and reporting on the health of EDTI’s linear assets, while supporting and guiding Operations crews during maintenance and repair activities.

 

What’s required to be successful

 

  •  Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering is required.
    • Additional Power System experience is preferred.
  • Registered or eligible to be registered with APEGA as a Professional Member/ Licensee (P.Eng.) with the ability to review, approve and stamp designs.
  • 8+ years of experience in Transmission & Distribution.
  • Experience in Transmission & Distribution’s operations, project management, ARS/NERC compliance, line equipment installations, equipment health indicators, and equipment specification, testing, and commissioning requirements.
  • Experience in planning and executing new initiatives, and implementing new processes and procedures.
  • Experience in strategizing maintenance and repair with respect to the asset management of aerial and underground transmission infrastructure.
  • Experience in Factory acceptance testing and field testing of conductors from 72-500kV.
  • Experience in Oil-filled cables and pump plants is an asset.
  • High proficiency with computer software such as Microsoft Office, IVARA and/ or other CMMS tools such as Maximo or SAP.
  • Strong knowledge of Transmission line design and construction methods, procedures, work practices, and techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of Transmission line standards, material specifications, and engineered guidelines.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Alberta Electric Utility Code, IEEE, and CSA Standard requirements.
  • Strong diagnostic skills with the ability to manage complex problems and develop solutions where processes or parameters are not clearly specified.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, leadership skills, and facilitation and collaboration skills.
  • Strong ability to influence people and make decisions.
  • Ability to understand and manage complex budgets.
  • Ability to work effectively in a large team within a dynamic environment.
