Highlights of the job

We are hiring a Full Time, Permanent Utility Worker I, II, III, or IV for our distribution department for EPCOR’s Fountain Hills district.

What you’d be responsible for

Repair and maintain fire hydrants, main line valves, water service lines, water mains, water meters and fittings, installation of new water services, water system flushing, water quality sampling, flow testing, traffic control, and preventative maintenance activities e.g. valve exercising and fire hydrant inspections.

Installation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater collection systems including sewer laterals, mains, taps, main cleaning and clearing blockages, roach control, and raises/lowers/repairs of manholes. 

Provide assistance to Field Service Representative team, reading meters and line locating when needed to backfill due to absences.  Performs other work as required.       

What’s required to be successful

High school diploma or equivalent.  

 

Ability to read and interpret blueprints of water distribution and wastewater collection systems, service orders, and maintenance manuals.  Ability to code time card with up to 50 separate account codes.  Ability to perform standardized water quality tests; familiarity with drinking water rules and regulations.  Must be mobile and agile to make repairs in tight places.

 

Candidate must have thorough understanding of water distribution, and wastewater collection systems.  Must have knowledge of use of tools and equipment used in the water and wastewater field. 

 

Ability to keep neat and accurate records and make computer entries.  Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions and regulations.  Ability to work independently when given written and oral instructions.  Ability to operate motor vehicles such as dump trucks, backhoes, valve exerciser, mini-vac unit, and similar equipment.  Requires strength to lift heavy objects up to 70 pounds.  Ability to perform heavy manual labor in varying climatic conditions.  Ability to deal effectively and courteously with internal and external customers.

 

Minimum of 1 year qualifying work experience in the water distribution/treatment and wastewater collection/treatment field. Please refer to grade and certification requirements below.

 

Minimum requirements for each level:

 

Utility Worker I: Class A CDL License required or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire date. One (1) year of qualifying work experience in water distribution and wastewater collection field. Class ADEQ Grade 1 Water Distribution and Grade 1 Wastewater Collection certifications required or have the ability to obtain within one year of hire date.

 

Utility Worker II: Class A CDL License required or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire date. Two (2) years qualifying work experience in water distribution and wastewater collection field.  ADEQ Grade 2 Water Distribution and Grade 2 Wastewater Collection certifications required or have the ability to obtain within one year of hire date.

 

Utility Worker III: Class A CDL License required or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire date. Four (4) years qualifying work experience in water distribution and wastewater collection field. ADEQ Grade 3 Water Distribution and Grade 3 Wastewater Collection certifications required or have the ability to obtain within one year of hire date.

Utility Worker IV: Class A CDL License required or the ability to obtain within 1 year of hire date. Five (5) years qualifying work experience in water distribution and wastewater collection field. ADEQ Grade 4 Water Distribution and Grade 4 Wastewater Collection certifications required. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a lead person with supervisory responsibilities, including assistance with performance evaluation and staff development.

 

Other important facts about this job

 

This position is subject to callback, overtime and weekend/holiday emergency call outs and on call duty.  There are periods of continuous stooping, bending, walking, shoveling and sweeping.  May be exposed to insects, animals, reptiles, dust, pollen, chemicals, water and sewage.  Must be able to tolerate extreme heat.
