About the role
The Field Applications Engineer – Residential and C&I Systems is a customer‑facing technical role responsible for supporting the successful design, deployment, commissioning, and operation of Enphase solar, storage, and energy management systems across residential and commercial applications in the Bay Area.
This role serves as the technical authority in the field, working with installers, EPCs, distributors, engineering firms, and internal teams to drive adoption, resolve complex system‑level issues, and ensure customer success. The ideal candidate brings strong power systems fundamentals, hands‑on field experience, and the ability to communicate clearly across a wide range of customer technical skill levels.
Location Requirement
This role is based in Northern California and will primarily support partners located in this specific region. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to Northern California to be considered.
What you will do
Pre‑Sales Technical Support
- Provide pre‑sales technical guidance for residential and commercial projects, including:
- System architecture and design
- Microinverter, battery, and energy management configuration
- Design best practices for rooftops, multi‑family, and light‑commercial sites
- Partner with Sales to support strategic accounts, regional installers, and C&I opportunities where technical differentiation is critical.
- Support proposal development through technical design review, feature clarification, and risk identification.
System Design, Commissioning & Troubleshooting
- Support deployments across Residential and C&I Applications
- Troubleshoot complex system‑level issues involving:
- Single‑phase and three‑phase electrical systems
- Power quality, grounding, and isolation
- Communications and monitoring (Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, cellular, PLC)
- Battery energy storage systems and control behavior
- Provide on‑site or remote support for commissioning, system validation, and performance optimization.
Storage & Grid Integration
- Support residential and C&I energy storage applications, including:
- Backup power and resilience
- Self‑consumption and export control
- Time‑of‑use optimization and demand reduction
- Assist customers with California‑specific grid and interconnection requirements, including NEC, UL9540A, UL 1741 SB, IEEE 1547‑2018, California Rule 21 and Utility requirements (PG&E, SCE, SDGE, and other utilities)
- Serve as a regional resource on grid‑support functionality and system behavior in utility‑interactive environments.
On-site Support – White Glove Program
- Provide on-site support activities to guide installation partners to install and commission residential and C&I systems.
New Product Launch Support
- Work with installation partners to identify, design, install and commission Pilot sites before general product launch
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
- Act as the technical bridge between customers and internal Enphase teams, including:
- Sales
- Technical Support
- Product Management
- Engineering
- Provide structured field feedback based on real‑world installations, customer requirements, and regional constraints.
- Support escalation cases where field insight and system‑level understanding are required.
Who you are and What you bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical engineering, Power Systems, Renewable Energy, or related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3–5+ years of experience in solar PV, energy storage, power electronics, or field applications engineering, spanning residential and/or C&I.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot complex, multi‑disciplinary technical issues.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Willingness to travel locally within the Bay Area and regionally as needed (~50-70%).
- Solid understanding of:
- Residential and commercial PV system architectures
- Inverters and microinverters
- Battery energy storage systems
- Power distribution fundamentals (single‑ and three‑phase)
- Networking and monitoring systems
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Enphase products or similar distributed energy technologies.
- Hands‑on background in installation, commissioning, or field service.
- Familiarity with California AHJ and utility interconnection processes.
- Experience supporting both residential installers and commercial EPCs.
- Prior exposure to product feedback loops or cross‑functional technical roles.
- NABCEP certification
The base pay range for this position is $105,000 to $162,000 per year. This salary range may be modified in the future. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, education or training, work location, and market conditions. This position is also eligible for bonus, equity, and benefits.
