Job Summary - a concise overview of the job

The Strategic Sourcing Planner assists and supports the development and design of processes, objectives, and metrics to ensure that quality approved API is delivered on time and in full, leading to API Sourcing function success. This role is responsible for maintaining effective and efficient relationships with external partners and internal cross-functional teams, including but not limited to Supply Chain, Logistics, Business Development, Technical Operations, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Program Management and R&D.


All incumbents are responsible for following applicable Division & Company policies and procedures.

Scope of Authority - span of control (work unit, site, department, division, etc.), monetary value of budget/spend authority ( capital, operating, etc.), P&L responsibility, etc.

Strategic Sourcing

  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal stakeholders and supplier toward the achievement of functions strategies and goals
  • Contribute to weekly site meetings to review API supply KPIs. Lead discussion and issue resolution of supply chain activities to ensure sustained product supply
  • Identifying and ordering the requisite API quantity to avoid excess inventory, ensuring prompt PO acceptance, firm ETA and overseeing the timely delivery of APIs
  • Utilizing SAP and collaborating with the sites, provide a robust and accurate bi-weekly report highlighting API on-hand inventory, comparing and reconciling any differences, escalating supply risk and vetting inventory write-offs with management for approval
  • Provide high level summary of major inventory changes, potential supply risks, significant excess stock and inventory write off against annual targets
  • Rigorously maintain and ensure up-to-date and accurate SAP ERP data such as closing monthly IDOCS and financial reconciliations, lead times, delivery date, quantity, cost, incoterms etc…) and ensure orders are fulfilled on time and in full
  • Effective communicator on API supply position, regularly engage with suppliers on meeting ETAs, provide internal site status on open orders and escalate supply deviations
  • Maintain and update data within Share-point, including potential source detail and market pricing for APIs to maintain competitive edge within the market for existing and new product opportunities. 
  • Request new vendor set up or modifications in SAP, as required, while adhering to required Change Control procedure; request new internal code






Education & Experience

Minimal acceptable level of education, work experience and certifications required for the job

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 2-4 years’ experience within the pharmaceutical industry with a concentration in contract manufacturing, purchasing, business development and supply chain.
  • Experience effectively communicating and working professionally with internal and external personnel.
  • Strong background in Pharmaceutical Ingredients’ sourcing is desirable.


Proficiency in a body of information required for the job 

e.g. knowledge of FDA regulations, GMP/GLP/GCP, Lean Manufacturing, Six-Sigma, etc.

  • General knowledge of key manufacturers/suppliers and associated specialties.
  • Working knowledge of the Pharmaceutical business including the branded/generic market, competitive landscape and legal environment as it pertains to R&D API procurement.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software applications.
  • General understanding business implications of decisions; displays orientation to profitability.
  • Knowledge of cGMP requirements, contract negotiations, and related practices.

Physical Requirements

Physical & mental requirements     e.g. lift 40 pounds, walk across plant/warehouse, business travel (% of time), driving as part of work responsibilities, etc.

  • Limited domestic and international travel may be required.
