Primary Location
This role is based out of our headquarters location Moline, IL and open to hybrid work with a minimum of 50% of time spent onsite every month.

Primary Purpose
Design, develop, and maintain software solutions that power advanced lighting systems for aircraft. Work closely with cross-functional teams including hardware engineers, product managers, and quality assurance to deliver reliable, safe, and efficient lighting control.
 
Primary Responsibilities
  1. Design, implement, and test embedded and application-level software for aircraft lighting control systems.
  2. Collaborate with hardware engineers to integrate software with lighting hardware, sensors, and control units.
  3. Ensure all software meets FAA, ICAO, and other relevant aviation safety and compliance standards.
  4. Provide ongoing support for deployed systems, including troubleshooting, bug fixes, and performance enhancements.
  5. Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, including design specifications, user manuals, testing protocols, and change control procedures to ensure traceability, regulatory compliance, and consistent implementation of software modifications through the product lifecycle.
  6. Participate in research and development initiatives to improve system efficiency, introduce smart lighting features, and explore IoT and AI applications in aviation lighting.
  7. Actively engage with customer feedback and field data to inform software design decisions, prioritize feature development, and ensure solutions align with real-world operational needs and user expectations.
  8. Design and implement secure, scalable OTA update mechanisms for aviation lighting systems, enabling remote software deployment and configuration across fleets to improve operational efficiency and reduce maintenance downtime.
  9. Develop and execute comprehensive software testing strategies, including unit testing, integration testing, regression testing, and system validation, to ensure reliability, performance, and compliance with aviation standards.
  10. Apply Elliott Aviation’s mechanical design standards to develop and implement structural repairs, antenna installations, equipment mounting solutions, and instrument panel replacements; support interior shop with structural design of new or replacement cabinetry; collaborate with external DERs and assist with FAA conformity processes.
  11. Utilize Elliott Aviation’s standards for avionics wiring diagrams and wire marking; support external DER collaboration; coordinate FAA conformity scheduling and flight test activities.
 Core Competencies
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents.
  • Experience in creating, reading, and understanding blueprints and wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to design an aircraft modification and follow it through certification and delivery.
  • An expert understanding of FAA requirements and regulations regarding aircraft modifications.
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment, providing input and feedback in a helpful manner.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with internal and external partners in a professional, courteous, and helpful manner. 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in software development in embedded systems or industrial automation.
  • 3+ years of program management experience.
  • Proficiency in object-oriented programming languages such as C/C++, Python, or Java.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the aviation or aerospace industry preferred.
  • Knowledge of lighting control systems, PLC programming, or SCADA systems.
  • Familiarity with DO-178C or other aviation software certification standards.
  • Experience with cloud-based monitoring systems and IoT integration. 
  • Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and microcontroller programming.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, CAN, Ethernet).
  • Understanding of safety-critical systems and software validation practices.
Other Requirements
  • Ability to attain & retain AOA badge or Airport requirements
  • Valid State Driver’s License for occasional travel

The salary range for this role is $81,000 USD - $137,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.  Specific compensation for this role will be determined by several factors including but not limited to; minimum and preferred qualifications, knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience and location. This role is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.
