SALARY RANGE: The anticipated salary range for this role is $26.00 per hour. This range reflects a good faith estimate based on the targeted level for the role and typical compensation benchmarks across U.S. locations. SUMMARY

The Software Engineering Specialist I is an entry-level technical role that supports software, firmware, autonomy, and test engineering teams through hands-on test execution, scripting assistance, log analysis, and maintaining development/test environments. This role focuses on executing defined tasks rather than designing software, making it ideal for candidates early in their software career.

The Software Engineering Specialist I works under close supervision to run test procedures, capture results, prepare hardware/software setups, and assist engineers with data handling and simple automation tasks.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The following job functions are a basic requirement but are not limited to and may be assigned other duties.

• Execute software, firmware, and autonomy test procedures in simulation environments, HIL rigs, and on device-level hardware.
• Capture logs, record test steps, and document results in accordance with engineering test plans.
• Assist engineers with preparing testbeds, updating builds, configuring devices, and validating software deployments.
• Support troubleshooting by reproducing issues, collecting evidence, and performing structured test reruns.
• Perform basic log reviews to identify time stamps, error codes, or patterns (no interpretation of algorithms required).
• Help maintain lab hardware, including flashing firmware, verifying cable connections, and tracking test equipment.
• Write or modify simple scripts (Python, Bash, or PowerShell) under guidance to automate repetitive tasks.
• Support version control by checking in files, updating branches, and maintaining repository organization following written instructions.
• Assist in preparing documentation packages including test reports, configuration notes, and lab setup diagrams.
• Follow safety and handling procedures for embedded systems, servers, and UAV electronics.
• Assumes all other responsibilities as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Coursework, certification, or bootcamp training in computer science, IT, scripting, or software fundamentals preferred.
• 0–2 years of experience supporting software testing, IT systems, robotics, or embedded systems (school projects or hobbyist experience welcome).
• Exposure to simulation tools, CLI environments, or simple automation frameworks is a plus.
• Basic proficiency with at least one scripting language (Python preferred).
• Ability to navigate Linux or Windows command-line environments.
• Familiarity with Git or similar version control systems.
• Understanding of basic software concepts such as variables, loops, file I/O, or APIs.
• Comfortable working with hardware/software interfaces (USB devices, dev boards, networked test systems).
• Strong attention to detail and consistency in following structured test procedures.
• Good documentation habits and ability to record accurate data.
• Willingness to learn new tools and technologies quickly.
• Strong problem-solving mindset with curiosity about technical systems.
• Clear communication and ability to collaborate with software, firmware, and test engineers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Certificate or AA degree in Computer Science, Software Development, IT, Mechatronics, or similar technical discipline.
• Prior experience with robotics, UAVs, or embedded software test environments.
• Experience using simulation environments or HIL systems.
• Ability to write small scripts to automate tasks (Python, Bash, PowerShell).
• Basic understanding of networking, messaging protocols, or data logging formats.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot lab setups or test execution issues.
• Organized, methodical approach to managing multiple test cases or configurations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The work environment may involve a standard office setting while also incorporating elements of a production area. Employees will use standard office equipment, including computers, and must demonstrate stamina to sit or stand while maintaining attention to detail despite potential interruptions. The role may require occasional activities such as walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and bending. Vision is necessary for reading printed materials and a computer screen, while hearing and speech are essential for effective communication both in person and over the telephone. Additionally, the position may necessitate travel by air or automobile. Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coats, to ensure safety in the production environment. Employees may be able to lift up to 30 pounds as needed.
