FLSA STATUS: Exempt

SALARY RANGE: The anticipated salary range for this role is $58,500 to $76,000 per year in Huntsville and $68,000 to $85,000 per year in San Luis Obispo. This range reflects a good faith estimate based on the targeted level for the role and typical compensation benchmarks across U.S. locations. Actual compensation may vary depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications, experience, geographical location, and internal alignment.

 

SUMMARY

The role of the Staff Accountant involves providing financial, administrative and clerical support to the accounting department. Their role is Accounts Payable-based, to complete payments and control expenses by receiving payments, plus processing, verifying and reconciling invoices.  They may be responsible for making payments owed by the company to suppliers and other creditors, paying vendor invoices or bills, receiving and reviewing invoices for accuracy, paying suppliers, and recording the company's short-term debts.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The following job functions are a basic requirement but are not limited to and may be assigned other duties.

  • Comparing reports to balances and verifying entries
  • Collaborating with internal departments to gather, analyze and interpret financial data
  • Receiving, processing, verifying and reconciling invoices
  • Full cycle accounts payable invoice processing:
  • Process credit card vendor invoices timely and accurately
  • Perform 3-way matching, batching and coding of invoices
  • Prepare weekly check runs
  • Maintain accounts payable subledger and research and resolve any discrepancies
  • Verifies vendor accounts by reconciling monthly statement
  • Prepare annual 1099 reporting
  • Review and process employee expense reports and ensure compliance with companies travel and expense policies; reconcile and post monthly credit card activity
  • Prepare month end reconciliations which include credit card accruals, expense report accruals and accounts payable accruals
  • Ensures confidentiality of the accounting departments information
  • Accurate data entry skills

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The following are a non-exhaustive list of qualifications for the position:

  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in accounting, finance or related (or equivalent experience in lieu of)
  • Proficient in Excel, Word, and Outlook; experience with accounting software is a plus.
  • At least 2 years’ experience as an accounts payable specialist, staff accountant, or accounting.
  • Experience working with government contracting, with specific understanding of DCAA compliance is a plus.
  • In-depth knowledge of accounts payable principles, accounting standards, and industry regulations standards.
  • Experience in account reconciliation.
  • Great time management and organizational skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The work environment may involve a standard office setting while also incorporating elements of a production area. Employees will use standard office equipment, including computers, and must demonstrate stamina to sit or stand while maintaining attention to detail despite potential interruptions. The role may require occasional activities such as walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and bending. Vision is necessary for reading printed materials and a computer screen, while hearing and speech are essential for effective communication both in person and over the telephone. Additionally, the position may necessitate travel by air or automobile. Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, safety shoes, and shop coats, to ensure safety in the production environment. Employees may be able to lift up to 30 pounds as needed.
