Location: Downtown Kelowna
Status: full-time contract until June 2025 (Monday to Friday between 7am and 7pm; rotational shifts)

As a Laboratory Assistant, you are responsible for the preparation of samples and/or reagents for routine processing, the performance of simple non-interpretive tests under the technical oversight of a Medical Laboratory Technologist as required, and the independent performance of simple non-interpretive tests escalating to a qualified Medical Laboratory Technologist for support and guidance as required. You will also ensure quality control checks and standards are run as required and participate in all quality assurance programs and ensure company and Ministry of Health (MOH) guidelines are observed. Lastly, you will perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment as appropriate and deal with problems that arise.

How YOU will make a difference:
- Receive and sort samples
- Data enter the results into the company’s database as required
- Ensure that all abnormal, critical and STATS are processed as outlined in the department guidelines
- Ensure that all samples are properly labeled and identified before testing
- Follow established protocol for the handling of unsuitable samples
- Perform pre-analytic specimen processing
- Operate instruments following department procedures
- Perform simple non-interpretive testing procedures
- Handle infectious material following approved procedures while adhering to government regulations (i.e. TDG) as required
- Responsible for the follow-up on missing samples, documentation and results as and when required
- Ensure all inquiries and problems are handled in a courteous and professional manner
- Ensure adequate amount of supplies are on hand and that validated reagents and testing kits to be used are in date order
- Ensure that quality control checks are performed as required in documented work procedures
- Responsible for monitoring quality control guidelines and making appropriate corrections
- Refer results for Medical Laboratory Technologist to review and release
- Responsible to follow all relevant pre and/or post analytical quality protocols as described in the company quality assurance manual
- Perform routine maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment following department procedures
- Document all maintenance performed, including minor troubleshooting following manufacturer’s instructions
- Participate in the review of procedural documents for accuracy and effectiveness as required
- Observe and report all malfunctions in equipment and maintain all required logbooks for routine equipment
- Responsible for disinfecting the work area and equipment on a daily basis
- Store and discard specimens according to appropriate department procedure manuals
What YOU bring to the role:
- You have completed a Diploma/Degree in Health or Science or have a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) certification or are a Graduate of an approved laboratory assistant course
- You are customer-focused with a genuine care for patient’s health
- Demonstrate skill in phlebotomy, with the ability to manage anxious patients through the sample obtaining process in a pleasant, calming and reassuring manner
- Prioritize and self-manage within a deadline-oriented environment
- Be extremely detail oriented
- Proficiency in English, both written and verbal, at a level that enables you to communicate instructions, clearly and understandably, to patients
Salary: between $21 and $25 per hour
The hiring pay range has been established; however, the final pay offer will be determined by taking into consideration various factors including but not limited to, level of experience and education requirements.
