Are YOU our next Medical Laboratory Assistant? 
As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you are responsible for the preparation of samples and/or reagents for routine processing. Perform simple non-interpretive tests under the technical oversight of a Medical Laboratory Technologist as required Independently perform simple non-interpretive tests escalating to a qualified Medical Laboratory Technologist for support and guidance as required. Ensure quality control checks and standards are run as required. Participate in all quality assurance programs and ensure company and Ministry of Health (MOH) guidelines are observed. Perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment as appropriate and deal with problems that arise.

How YOU will make a difference:
  • Receive and sort samples
  • Data enter test orders (i.e., enter patient demographics and test requests from requisitions into the LIS)
  • Ensure that all samples are properly labeled and identified before testing
  • Follow established protocol for the handling of unsuitable samples
  • Perform pre-analytic specimen processing (e.g. sample pour offs, sample plating in microbiology etc.)
  • Operate complex instruments following department procedures
  • Perform simple non-interpretive testing procedures
  • Ensure that all abnormal, critical and STATS are processed as outlined in the department guidelines
  • Package and ship infectious material following approved procedures while adhering to government regulations (i.e. TDG) as required
  • Responsible for the follow-up on missing samples, documentation and results as and when required
  • Ensure all inquiries and problems are handled in a courteous and professional manner
  • Ensure adequate amount of supplies are on hand and that validated reagents and testing kits to be used are in date order
  • Data enter the results into the company’s database as required
  • Ensure that quality control checks are performed as required in documented work procedures
  • Refer results for Medical Laboratory Technologist to review and release
  • Responsible for monitoring quality control guidelines and making appropriate corrections
  • Responsible to follow all relevant pre and/or post analytical quality protocols as described in the company quality assurance manual
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance following documented procedures
  • Document all maintenance performed, including minor troubleshooting following manufacturer’s instructions
  • Participate in the review of procedural documents for accuracy and effectiveness as required
  • Observe and report all malfunctions in equipment and maintain all required logbooks for routine equipment
  • Responsible for disinfecting the work area and equipment on a daily basis
  • Store and discard specimens according to appropriate department procedure manuals
What YOU bring to the role:
  • Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) certification, or Graduate of an approved laboratory assistant course, or Diploma/Degree in Health or Science required.
  • Excellent data entry skills required
  • Proficiency in specimen handling and processing
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills

Working Conditions

  • Required continuous standing/walking with use of fine motor skills
  • Required to perform some carrying and lifting a maximum of 30 pounds
  • Exposed to biohazardous substances, chemicals and noise variances
  • Shift work required
Starting at $24.25 per hour
The hiring pay range has been established; however, the final pay offer will be determined by taking into consideration various factors including but not limited to, level of experience and education requirements.
