This is an exciting opportunity to work for one of the top law firms in the U.S.! Davis Wright Tremaine LLP is looking for a Legal Assistant - Litigation to join our team in our Anchorage office.
 
We offer a hybrid work engagement with flexibility to work remotely up to two days a week.
 
This position will provide and coordinate administrative, clerical, and legal support to attorneys in employment and real property practices, supporting effective use of their time. This position requires an ability to work independently as well as in a team environment with timekeepers and staff members. Prior litigation experience strongly preferred.

On a typical day you will:
  • Understand assigned timekeepers’ practice and clients
  • Extensive interaction with clients; acts as intermediary with clients and responds to client requests
  • File documents with state and federal courts, as well as with government agencies
  • Manage client billing process, including review and editing of pre-bills
  • Maintain up-to-date forms, including collaboration with other departments on templates
  • Check in regularly with attorney to ensure all aspects of any project are under control. Prompt as needed. Exercise careful judgment about when to ask for guidance
  • Assign appropriate tasks to other departments and support staff. Follow up on status of all projects to ensure timely completion
  • Communicate clearly with all appropriate team members on project status
  • Organize and maintain binders for trials mediations, arbitrations, working papers and business development purposes
  • Schedule appointments, depositions, meetings; maintain calendars; make travel arrangements; set up conference calls; arrange food service
  • Track litigation and closing deadlines, provide deadlines to docketing and confirm deadlines are docketed correctly
  • Maintain attorney and client records. Maintain email and electronic records
  • Open new client and new matter files
  • Schedule and coordinate appointments, meetings and conference calls and maintain calendars
  • Answer, screen, and respond to phone calls
  • Prepare and submit expense reimbursement reports and check requests
  • Assist fellow assistants and additional attorneys as needed
  • Notarize documents. Position may require secretary to become and maintain Alaska Notary 

Join us if you have:

  • A high school diploma or GED certification required, Associates degree or higher preferred 
  • 2+ years’ experience as a legal assistant/secretary, or equivalent experience in a professional office setting
  • Up to date experience filing documents with Alaska State and Federal Courts, including government agencies. Ability to read and understand court rules, including rules for courts you have not worked with before, and to ensure compliance with assigned judge’s Individual Rules and Practices
  • Strong skills in word processing and computer use: ability to type 85 wpm with high accuracy; proficiency in MS Office Products (Word, WordDocx, Outlook, Excel) and common PDF programs required; knowledge of PowerPoint, time keeping programs, NetDocs preferred; ability to perform internet research
  • High degree of attention to detail and sensitivity to confidential and sensitive materials required
  • Ability and willingness to learn new programs and program updates
  • Excellent spelling, grammar, proofreading and organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks on a desk and to handle multiple demands from multiple people in a professional manner
  • Current experience with Government Contracts, including GAO protests preferred
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with all levels of a professional services organization, including interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a team-oriented, service focused environment and to handle stressful situations in a calm, composed manner 
  • Ability to partner with secretaries and staff in other offices
  • Ability to communicate by telephone in a professional, courteous manner with clients, firm members, and other business contacts
  • Ability to understand and follow work instructions with minimal supervision
  • Ability to follow client confidentiality guidelines
  • Ability to read and write in English fluently
