PURPOSE & SCOPE OF POSITION:  

The Area Manager is responsible for leading and managing multiple underground mining projects within their assigned region to ensure the safe, productive, and profitable execution of Dumas’ contractual obligations. The role provides strategic and operational leadership to project teams, ensuring that Dumas’ core values of safety, respect, results, and teamwork are upheld at all times. This position plays a key role in maintaining and growing client relationships, supporting business development opportunities, and driving operational excellence that aligns with Dumas’ commitment to delivering quality work safely and efficiently.

The Area Manager oversees a portfolio of underground mining projects—ranging from mine development and construction to rehabilitation and production support—across multiple client sites. The position has full responsibility for the financial, operational, and safety performance of these projects, including workforce planning, cost control, and compliance with corporate policies and procedures.
The Area Manager acts as the primary liaison between site management, clients, and the corporate office, ensuring alignment between project execution and company strategy.

Site Project Managers, Site Superintendents, and administrative support staff 
 
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
 
Operational Leadership 
·         Oversee the safe execution of all underground projects in the assigned area, ensuring compliance with Dumas’ Safety Management System and client site procedures.
·         Lead site management teams to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to specification.
·         Support project planning, scheduling, and resource allocation to achieve productivity and cost targets.
·         Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for safety, production, quality, and cost performance.
People Leadership 
·         Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to Site Project Managers, Superintendents, and site-based leadership teams.
·         Support recruitment, onboarding, and training of skilled personnel to meet operational needs.
·         Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Client and Business Relations 
·         Build and maintain strong client relationships through consistent communication, problem-solving, and proactive service.
·         Identify opportunities to expand Dumas’ scope of work or secure additional contracts within the region.
·         Represent Dumas professionally in all client and stakeholder interactions.
Financial and Administrative Management 
·         Ensure projects are managed within approved budgets and margins.
·         Review and approve cost reports, invoices, and forecasts.
·         Participate in monthly performance reviews and report project status to the General Manager.
·         Support bid preparation and contract negotiations when required.
Other Duties 
·         Ensure Dumas’ safety and training programs are always adhered to.
·         Participate in special projects as may be assigned from time to time.
·         Perform other duties as may be assigned
 
COMPETANCIES, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: 
 
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in underground mining, with at least 5 years in a leadership role such as Project Manager, Superintendent, or Area Manager.
  • Strong technical understanding of underground development, ground support, and construction methods.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and diverse teams.
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Strong business acumen and understanding of project financials.
  • Demonstrated commitment to health, safety, and environmental excellence.
  • Post-secondary education in Mining Engineering or Technology, Mechanical Engineering or technology, or a related field is an asset.
  • Willingness to travel frequently to project sites within Canada.
