The role
You’ll own one of three North American regional coverage areas: East (PJM, NYISO, ISO-NE), Central (ERCOT, MISO, the Southeast), or West (WECC, SPP, AESO). You’ll become the recognized expert on the long-term outlook for energy, capacity, and ancillary service prices in that region. Your published views will shape how institutional investors, IPP developers, hyperscalers, and utilities make multi-decade capital decisions, and you’ll be the team member clients ask for by name.
This role reports to Juan Arteaga, who leads Power Market Fundamentals & Long-Term Forecasting.
This is an in-office role based at our Calgary headquarters with regular travel to the US for client meetings and conferences.
A day on the team
- Independently lead a 45-minute call with a hedge fund PM debating whether to short an IPP based on your view of the next capacity auction.
- Publish a note under your byline on what the latest IRP or market reform filing means for new entrants in your region.
- Update your forecast methodology after a major policy shift and walk the rest of the team through the change.
- Mentor the associate on the regional forecast they own.
- Speak on a panel at an industry conference about your region’s long-term outlook.
How we work
Most research shops give ownership of the hardest problems to the most senior person on the team; everyone below executes. We do the opposite. Every analyst, even at entry-level, owns their projects end-to-end and pulls in senior team members for guidance. That hands-on, problem-by-problem ownership is how you build the confidence and judgment to add real value to our clients, and it’s the single biggest reason people stay on this team.
Who thrives on this team
- Your intelligence is broad, not narrow. You aren’t the world’s expert on power flow analysis, but you’re smart enough to master it if put to the task. You’re more interested in solving the whole problem than being the deepest specialist on one piece of it.
- You ask for help early. You’d rather make ten phone calls and look slightly less smart than struggle alone for two weeks.
- You understand that excellent and on time outperforms perfect and late.
- You’d rather write a tight one-pager than a 40-slide deck.
- You take the work seriously, not yourself.
- You seek to be a direct contributor to infrastructure development, bridging the gap between data analysis and real-world implementation.
What you’ll own
- A region, end-to-end. One of East, Central, or West. You are the team’s view on supply, demand, market design, and price formation for the ISOs and balancing authorities in that region.
- Long-term forecasts. Design, maintain, and continuously improve proprietary long-term forecasts for energy, capacity, and ancillary service prices in your region.
- Generation mix and capacity expansion. Direct the development of fundamentals-based models for new resource economics, retirements, transmission constraints, and policy-driven build-out scenarios in your region.
- Demand methodology. Set the standard for how the team forecasts electricity demand, incorporating data center growth, electrification, industrial reshoring, and weather/economic drivers.
- Thought leadership. Publish research notes, lead webinars, and serve as a senior subject-matter expert with corporate strategy teams, institutional investors, IPPs, utilities, and load-serving entities.
- Mentorship. Help the associate on the team own their region and grow into it.
- Cross-functional collaboration. Partner with product, data science, and engineering to integrate models into the Enverus Prism™ platform and improve workflow efficiency for clients.
Must-haves
- You’re someone people remember after a meeting: clear, confident, curious, and easy to spend an hour with. You can hold your own with a utility CFO, an IPP commercial lead, and a buy-side PM in the same afternoon.
- Direct experience with one or more North American ISO/RTO markets: capacity markets, ancillary services, long-term price formation.
- Hands-on experience building and operating production-grade capacity expansion or production-cost models (e.g., Aurora, PLEXOS, EnCompass, GridView, ReEDS, or proprietary equivalents).
- A track record of doing real things well: published research, models that shipped, decisions that got made because of your work.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a portfolio of client-facing or stakeholder-facing analysis.
- Self-motivated; you set your own pace and ask for guidance when you need it instead of waiting for direction.
- Willingness to live in Calgary and travel to the US for client meetings and conferences.
Helpful, but not required
- Python, SQL, or advanced Excel modeling.
- Prior experience at an IPP, utility, ISO/RTO, consultancy, or research/data provider.
- Professional designation (CFA, P.Eng., MBA, MS/PhD).
- Existing relationships in the IPP, utility, or institutional investor community.
What success looks like in your first 12 months
- You own a region (East / Central / West) and become the name clients ask for by Q3.
- You publish at least one piece of research that gets quoted in trade press.
- You’re on stage at two industry conferences and host a quarterly client roundtable.
- You mentor the associate on the team and help them ship their first regional forecast.
- You partner with product and data science to ship something on the Prism™ platform that wouldn’t exist without you.
