The role
You’ll own one of three North American regional coverage areas: East (PJM, NYISO, ISO-NE), Central (ERCOT, MISO, the Southeast), or West (WECC, SPP, AESO). You’ll become the team’s internal expert on the long-term outlook for energy, capacity, and ancillary service prices in that region. Your work informs how institutional investors, IPP developers, hyperscalers, and utilities make multi-decade capital decisions.
This role reports to Juan Arteaga, who leads Power Market Fundamentals & Long-Term Forecasting.
This is an in-office role based at our Calgary headquarters with regular travel to the US for client meetings and conferences.
A day on the team
- Take a call from a private equity client trying to underwrite a renewables portfolio in your region.
- Refresh your region’s long-term price curve after the latest ISO capacity auction and write a short note on what changed.
- Read an ISO/RTO market reform filing over coffee and figure out what it means for new entrants.
- Walk through your forecast assumptions with the rest of the team and defend the call, or update it.
- Sit in on a client conference with Juan and ask the questions you couldn’t have asked on day one.
How we work
Most research shops give ownership of the hardest problems to the most senior person on the team; everyone below executes. We do the opposite. Every analyst, even at entry-level, owns their projects end-to-end and pulls in senior team members for guidance. That hands-on, problem-by-problem ownership is how you build the confidence and judgment to add real value to our clients, and it’s the single biggest reason people stay on this team.
Who thrives on this team
- Your intelligence is broad, not narrow. You aren’t the world’s expert on power flow analysis, but you’re smart enough to master it if put to the task. You’re more interested in solving the whole problem than being the deepest specialist on one piece of it.
- You ask for help early. You’d rather make ten phone calls and look slightly less smart than struggle alone for two weeks.
- You understand that excellent and on time outperforms perfect and late.
- You’d rather write a tight one-pager than a 40-slide deck.
- You take the work seriously, not yourself.
- You seek to be a direct contributor to infrastructure development, bridging the gap between data analysis and real-world implementation.
What you’ll own
- A region. One of East, Central, or West, assigned to you and you alone. You become the team’s expert on the supply, demand, and market design dynamics shaping power prices in that region.
- Long-term price forecasts. Help build, update and validate fundamentals-based forecasts for energy, capacity, and ancillary service prices across the ISOs and balancing authorities in your region.
- Generation mix modelling. Contribute to fundamentals-based models of regional generation mix: renewables build-out, thermal retirements, capacity additions, transmission constraints.
- Demand forecasts. Incorporate drivers like data center growth, electrification, industrial reshoring, and weather normalization into the long-term demand view for your region.
- Client-ready deliverables. Contribute charts, tables, and written content to research publications and the Enverus Prism™ platform. Participate in client calls alongside senior team members.
- Cross-team collaboration. Partner with Power Assets, Large Load, and Commercial teams so your work plugs into theirs.
Must-haves
- You’re someone people remember after a meeting: clear, confident, curious, and easy to spend an hour with.
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Engineering, Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field.
- A track record of doing real things well: academic, internship, side project, startup, sport, or a club you built. We care more about what you’ve built than your GPA.
- Genuine interest in power markets, the energy transition, and the drivers of long-term electricity supply and demand.
- Comfort with structured quantitative reasoning and Excel.
- Willingness to live in Calgary and travel to the US for client meetings and conferences.
Helpful, but not required
- Python, SQL, or R.
- Prior internship or rotation at an IPP, utility, ISO/RTO, consultancy, or research/data provider.
- Existing familiarity with one of the three regional markets.
