Animation Technical Supervisor (DNEG Animation)

Key Purpose of the Job 
DNEG Animation is growing quickly after successfully delivering our first Animation feature and Short Film. Together we are bringing the vision of both major Hollywood studios and independent productions to life.

DNEG Animation is a leader in varied, high quality animation projects. We rely on our ANIMATON TECHNICAL SUPERVISORS to partner with our Animation teams and Production-Technology teams to help with the following on both individual Shows and for the whole Features division:

  • Improve animation department workflows, techniques, pipeline and animation tools by:
    • troubleshooting animator’s issues in collaboration with Production-Technology teams 
    • defining new, or identify missing, animation tools and pipeline improvements 
  • Interact and work with other related departments including Rigging, Layout, and FX
  • Help direct and guide Animation Production Technology teams (including Pipeline and Animation RnD) in relation to solving animation issues
  • Collaborate with DNEG Features Technology Architects, Project Managers and other department Technical Supervisors to uplevel overall company quality
  • Initiate and participate in animation tools, pipeline and workflow development meetings
  • Initiate and provide support (technical or otherwise) and training to teams as required
  • Design and maintain artist facing user documentation and demos for animation tools development and workflows

Must Have  

  • Significant production experience of Maya & Linux within features (+5 years)
  • Good production experience of Jira & Shotgun within features (+5 years)
  • Experience managing/mentoring small teams of either animators or pipe TDs (+2 years) 
  • Experience communicating between animators/production (including those with little technical knowledge) and very technical Production-Technology teams
  • Ability to problem solve and predict potential problems 
  • Have an excellent understanding of
    • how animation department workflows fit in the wider production pipeline
    • how/why animation tools and animation-centric pipeline aid animation workflow and schedules
  • Be comfortable with global collaboration, using excellent communication skills


Nice to Have

  • Character/Creature Animation production experience 
  • Python, or mel scripting experience (in relation to animation tools)
  • Good understanding of Layout department workflows
  • Some understanding of Rigging department workflows
  • Casual (?!!) understanding of USD, and its use in Maya and animation pipelines
