Software Developer – Lighting, Surfacing and Rendering
DNEG’s Lighting and Surfacing artist teams transform raw 3D data into high-end photoreal and stylised imagery. Surfacing artists create textures and materials, painted or procedural, using tools like Mari and Substance, while lighting artists use Katana and Solaris to build scenes, control lighting, and render final images with PRman and Karma.
As a developer in the Lux team, you may contribute to one or both disciplines, including material and texture workflows, scene assembly, render setup, automation, and lighting tools.
Success in this role requires strong technical ability, initiative, and the ability to collaborate effectively with both developers and artists. We value creative problem-solving and encourage new ideas.
Working in an Agile environment, you’ll partner with Product Owners and stakeholders to deliver tailored solutions, contributing across the full software lifecycle, from design and development to support and pipeline integration.
This is an opportunity to join a growing team developing technology that underpins high-end VFX and Feature Animation.

 

Must have:
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or relevant professional experience 
  • Programming experience in C++ and/or Python
  • Basic knowledge of DCCs for film and game production (Solaris, Katana, Houdini, Mari. Substance, etc)

 

Nice to have: 
  • Experience with software development in a Linux environment
  • Experience with source control systems and developing within a team 
  • Experience with unit/integration testing
  • Experience in Qt, Boost, 
  • Knowledge of the core principles of Surfacing, Lighting and Rendering
  • Experience in OpenGL, OpenColorIO, OSL, MaterialX, USD
  • Experience with the Katana C++ SDK and the Houdini C++ HDK
  • Experience with Houdini development using HOM and HDA
  • Experience with Houdini development creating interactive viewer tools.
  • Experience developing machine learning models
  • Experience developing AI-based solutions
